king clever for me man I used to religiously obey the lower limits, but so many roads have now been downgraded to a stupid degree around here that I now just use them for guidance. I still stick to the majority of 30 limits but as more and more 40s become 30s (most of which were 60s ten years ago) that wont last.
The council here has a tendency to drop an entire road from 60 -> 40 -> 30 because there is one unsighted corner or hill crest on it that a few morons used to take at 60.
ETA: I'm intrigued that so many people claim to obey all 30s, because in both the 30 limits that I do obey (which obviously are the ones that I consider should be 30 limits) and the ones I don't (most of which should probably be 40s) I usually end up with a queue of traffic tailgating me.

I obey the 30mph limit and limits in built-up areas generally where there are pedestrians and pets that can do unpredictable things. I also slow near cyclists and horses and give them the due consideration and respect they deserve as fellow road users.
However, open road, little or no traffic and I will take a view. As for motorways, again, it depends upon the conditions and traffic but I'm happy to press on if I feel the risks are in my favour.

I obey 20 and 30 limits religiously. Although the is a new 20 limit on my way to work that seems unnecessary. 40s it depends but largely stick to the limit. The rest I use my own judgement of the physical risk and risk to my license. Seems to have served me well over the last 15 years.
A choice is missing. A limit is just that "A LIMIT". Once upon a time ( as in all good fairy tales) it was set according to set rules ,by experts. Nowadays it's set by (IMHO) the WRI . For example the limit past my house is 20 . Fair enough on school days , early mornings and late at night, as there's always a fair amount of parked cars on a narrow road. Weekends /after 1600 and early mornings, the local kids are out in force and road safety - can we really teach it to 3 yr olds ? So my option would be the limit is advisory maximum,but drive at a speed consistent with the conditions /visibility and hazard density.

Hand on heart, this is a genuine question...These 20mph zones that you do 20mph through, what speed did you do through them when they were 30mph zones?

30 but at the same time the 20 limit arrived they stuck in a Waitrose and one of these 'speed table' roundabouts that you have to slow to a crawl for. A lot of people do 40 or more through the entire section of road because there's nothing there. However it will be in the middle of a housing estate eventually.These 20mph zones that you do 20mph through, what speed did you do through them when they were 30mph zones?

I think it's probably just that as time and technology has moved on the (original areas of) lower limits remain relatively closer to what most people would consider reasonable and are therefore more useful to them. It seems though that the value of these is being diluted too, if things continue in the direction they're going I'd expect to see voters in that group choose options further down the poll.
