Buying a car without the private plate

I bought a car in March this year. It had a private plate on it (nothing fancy) which the trader wanted to keep (fine by me).
I got the new keeper supplement and a receipt. A couple of weeks later the paperwork to transfer the plate to another car was returned to me (I didn't fill it in) due to "you are no longer the registered keeper". I rung the trader and he told me to send all the returned paperwork to him which I did.
Fast forward and I've still had nothing. I rung the trader a couple of times (both voicemail) and left one message saying I hadn't heard anything and my intention was to send a V62 for a new V5. Week or so later and today rung the DVLA who say they've received nothing about taking the plate off.
My receipt has a scribbled "number plate to be retained" on it, but if I send off for a V5 is there any comeback?
