Hi there,

My mum owns a 2012 Seat Leon 2.0 TDI CR which has covered 12,000 miles from new and has always been serviced by Seat main dealers.

Christmas 2013, the car made a horrendous noise on start-up which went away after approx. 1 minute of running. I managed to record it as a video on my mobile phone. We called the supplying dealer as soon as possible and booked it in for them to investigate the noise. They could not fault the car.

In March 2014, the noise occurred again and it went back to the dealer for them to investigate the noise again. They had the car for a few days and supplied my Mum with a Loan Car FOC. They still could not fault the car. The car also had it's first service (on LongLife intervals) at this time.

At this time, they sent the video recording of the noise to Seat UK and according to the dealer, Seat UK are unsure of what could be causing the noise.

We have just got the car back again (June 2014) for them to try and find the fault again. They could not fault it again.

My Mum spent a lot of money on purchasing the car and is getting concerned of what causes the noise, and if anything goes wrong out of money, she is worried that she will end up picking up the bill despite the car being looked at by the dealer within warranty.

She loves the car to pieces (as she has always wanted one) but wants the noise to be sorted.

What would you say the next thing to do was? We have considered contacting Seat UK themselves and voicing our concerns and find out what happens next.

Any help would be greatly received.

Many thanks

I can sympathise with the dealer actually. Especially if they have contacted Seat UK and they are baffled as well. I'm sure they don't want to have your car back and forth.

Escalating to Seat UK seems prudent. They should/could possibly arrange to have the car transported to wherever their technical department is in the UK (Google says Milton Keynes) and let them look at it whilst consulting with the factory. Whilst your mum gets a courtesy car.

Yeah, my complaint isn't with the dealer, we just want the car either fixed or have a definitive answer that the car is okay.

So you've heard the noise three times, spread across six months. All they have to go on is a report of it and a mobile phone video, because it hasn't done it on the handful of cold starts they've had the opportunity to do. VAG UK haven't even seen the car, and only have the mobile phone video.

Sounds to me like they're taking it seriously, but are working a bit blind.

If it's doing it from cold start for a minute, irregularly, then it's very unlikely to be anything fatal. Also, since it's been flagged up, you shouldn't have any issues with the warranty timing-out and them then refusing to deal with it.

Any chance of a link to the vid?

Plonk it on youtube, 'horrendous noise' isn't descriptive enough smile

Sounds like fan blades catching on a cowl to me, obviously isn't that simple though.

Doesn't sound very healthy, does it...?

Looks like it was a cold night - has there been any correlation with overnight temps?
Is it used every day?

Both times that the noise has occurred it has been wet from the rain in the morning, but then it has rained an awful lot inbetween those dates and hasn't done it then. The car gets used everyday.

The noise is a lot more than a slight rattle (as you can hear in the video) which is why it is concerning.

It does sound a lot like that, doesn't it?

Any correlation with whether the aircon is on or off?

Does this engine have a cam chain? Almost sounds like a lazy tensioner not working quickly enough.

I'm not sure about the A/C being on or off both times

The engine is cam belt driven, but surely a faulty tensioner would make the noise all of the time?

Probably worth finding a seat forum and posting it up, you may find its a known or common problem.

I have a Jag XJR and my Jag dealer has recommended I take it to an independant specialist to have problems diagnosed then bring it back to them with the diagnosis to have it fixed under warranty. In the words of the jag dealer 'take it to someone who knows what they are doing, all we can do is plug in the computer'.

May I ask what makes you think it is an Alternator noise?

I will post it up on the SEAT Forum; thank you for the tip!

If it's oil-pressurised, and draining down, then it'd be slack until the pressure builds up. Same for a faulty hydraulic tappet.
