The supermarkets are significantly cheaper (as they are in the UK too), making it about £1.20 / EUR 1.52 for a litre of san plomb 
The French government (i think although it does look to have adverts) run a website where all petrol stations have to show their prices

If you have an idea of how far you can get on the fuel you have you can search for the towns/supermarkets with cheaper fuel or stations on the autoroute to see how much extra they are.
