I suspect that particular diesel-engined vehicle is not running correctly, to be putting out that much smoke. There is either no DPF, some sort of DPF issue, or some sort of engine issue (faulty injector/s).

I do agree though, the issue with particulate "smog" emissions makes me question the use of diesel engines in a world where green tech is king.

That being said, whilst petrol cars put out "invisible" emissions, they still put out emissions. And on a day like today, with strong sunshine, smog and secondary pollutants (by that I mean products of the reactions of pollutants from exhausts) will be a big problem. All in all, nothing is clean and everything is dirty. Some things appear more dirty than others.

Diesel is potentially more sustainable though, given it can be readily synthesised (syngas?). So for the developing world, or in places where good quality petrol is hard to come by, diesel is king.

Last night when I started the chainsaw Can't remember ever seeing it from a 4 stroke though except when the piston rings on my bike wore and it was using about 1 litre of oil per 1000 miles.

I drive a Toyota diesel (not through choice). It's a hateful engine with awful throttle response, a miniscule band of power and no character whatsoever. Not all diesels are this hateful, I am sure.
