1995 Jag XJR6

It's the old style system with the earlier connectors, Contrasting info when I've searched. I've read that a whole new system is required, but others say I can get an adaptor and just gas it up with the newer refridgerant.

I may well have a major leak anyway, but I'd love some clarification as to what to do.

At that age I think you can do the adaptor thing . Pretty sure 1992/3 was the point where they banned the really different gas

I read that cars manufactured from 96 onwards were required to use the newer R134 gas. I need to know what differences were made to the aircon systems if any at all.

Go the adaptor route, it'll be fine.

I see you are in Surrey so give Vehvac a call not too far away in Edenbridge. I have nothing to do with them, they were recommended to me by someone years ago and were really good. Since sent loads of mates to them and all returned happy!!

Cheers, they are miles away from me but I called them and they said the same as you two, get an adaptor and put the new gas in it.

Looks like an adaptor is going to set me back £4. Too good to be true?

Thanks.

I believe the old R12 gas was more efficient so it may not cool as well as it did with the original gas. Back when the new R134 gas was introduced there were tales of the seals not being compatable and the compressor bearings will fail quicker etc but I've never had any issues. I believe a lot was to do with the oil in the new gas. I'm led to believe that's evolved somewhat anyway.

Somewhere near right!

The main cause of compressor failure is too MUCH gas. Then the oil can't "float" on the gas and get around the system. R134 is ok on an R12 system, but as has been said, not quite so good. Go for the adaptors - but make sure the right amount of gas is used.

Isn't RS24 supposed to be a drop-in replacement for R12?

I run R134 refrigerant in my 1993 Celica which was designed for R12 - not had any issues, although to be fair...I don't use it much.
I'd be really surprised if your car was filled with R12 in 1995, considering it was outright banned in late '93? Are you sure it's not just a propitiatory connector with standard R134 gas in the system?

You'd be surprised. I had the opportunity of an R12 fill not that many years ago. Friend of a friend and all that. Some garages still had some tucked away in the corner for quite a while after.

I have no idea which gas is in there if any at all, Looks like I'll have to buy 2 seperate and different adaptors for both connections.
