Can't say I've seen this discussed on Pistonheads so shut me down if there is already a thread running.

This looks like a really interesting prototype and one that will make it to production it seems. It's a diesel Audi RS shock horror! But they've made the engine respond as well or better than a petrol using an electric blower to feed the turbos. Check out the review below...

It reads as though the turbo threashold has been lowered not that the throttle response is great.

Bi blower setup on my old 123d had a similar effect it would be on full boost at 1200rpm and transition over to the big turbo between 2200-2800rpm. It didn't use any electrics, had some fancy piping between the turbo's though.

Looks decent though, its a nice alternative from the 640d.

This extract reads to me like the throttle response is quite good...

Autocar - "But fitted with this new e-booster, the engine’s turbochargers can be primed while the driver is still braking, so that full torque is available virtually immediately the driver gets back on the gas."

If they can make it sound anything like the SQ5 they are on to a winner. No diesel has a right to sound so bloody good!

Ah my mistake. I read that extract as though you could throttle and brake at the same time to get the turbo's spooling laugh not that the e-booster does the work

You haven't heard one then have you?

Its electronic trickery piped through the speakers though....Why they picked the sound of an AMG V8 for a V6 Im not quite sure, but it still sounds bloody good!

I'd have one of these. It just makes so much more sense then the petrol alternative

I'm sure that will sound interesting as it groans on to 5000 rpm.

I know what derv means. Just wondering what the point of the comment was from the 1970s time traveller?

All I meant was that the SQ5 doesn't sound bad for a diesel. That's pretty much it.

Audis have an awful brand image. But there is no denying, 0 to 60mph in 3.x seconds is mighty impressive for a diseasel. The German car firms are moving to a whole new level recently with their flagship models.

So basically they have made one of those electrically driven superchargers off ebay

You could say the same about just about any "technological break through"

The big difference is that Audi are going into production with it, and that IS a massive step forwards in terms of the applied technology.

(The E-booster also does quite a lot of other clever stuff that hasn't yet been released, so it's not just an "e-booster" in fact)
