Suggestions for a new motor.

OK, so I'm after a new car, but I have no idea what I want.
I've thought about everything from M5's, M3's, various AMG's, A8 4.2tdi and the W12 flavour, Phaeton V10, any of the V8 Cerberas, Monaro VXR, Jaguar XJR / XKR (the V8 supercharged flavours), and so on.
I'm after something fast, fun, reliable (ish), without horrendous running costs if possible. I'm a mechanic by trade, and have access to most garage tools to do my own repairs, so costs are reduced somewhat. I do somewhere between 8 and 12k miles per year, and whatever I buy will be my main car. MPG doesn't matter too much - smiles per gallon are more important to me. I don't commute to work, but drive up to 400 miles every weekend to go home and potter about.
My budget is up to around £20k, but it's possible to stretch it slightly. I don't have to spend all the cash either - I love driving s
t-heaps around, since you don't care about bangs, scrapes, knocks, or if it's still there (my cars are always still there - not even thieves want them!)
I'd really like a V8 in my life, and the supercharged Mercedes units sound awesome, but I could live with a Caterham or similar as a second car too. I just don't know!
My current motor is so dull it makes my eyes bleed - a 2003 D5 XC70 Auto, in re-sale silver. Super comfortable, expensive to maintain, but very, very, very, VERY, VERY dull.
Any other suggestions are welcome too - I'm completely open!
