Afternoon All,

I've just realised I've topped one of our cars up with the wrong oil.

I've put 0w40 in instead of 0w30. Approx 750ml.

How big a mistake have I just made?

Tia.

I deserve that!

I suppose a better question is: does the oil need dropping and replacing?

what's the year/make/model?
I ask because some cars can take 0/30 or 0/40. What matters more is whether the oil meets the OEM specification.

It's an 08 Mini Cooper S.

The oil is Castrol Edge.

Cheers

It's only ~20% of the total capacity. I'd leave it in and consider bring the next service forward.

I wouldn't worry about it. Less than a litre in a capacity of, at a guess, 5 litres is not going to make any noticeable difference.
Make sure you top it up with the right grade next time.

MB says 1L/1000km is normal for a Smart car. I thought that kind of consumption was unique to their 600cc engine.

BMW say 2.5L/1000 miles is acceptable on the E6X M5

I'm on mobile so can't see my garage but the CooperS has been checked by Mini as I thought the oil consumption was excessive and they say it's fine.

Iirc they weigh it for accuracy, we're at the very top end but by all accounts 1l in 1k miles is acceptable. Apparently...

How much is yours going through?

Assuming it's fully synthetic there's not really much to worry about, different grades can be mixed no problem.

I really need to update that!

I had the R32 from new and it hardly used any, didn't do a lot of miles in it though.

It won't cause any problems, if there is some info in the handbook, it'll most likely mention a range of different grades for different expected temperatures.
