You'll not find out at the dealers. Had to pick my car up this afternoon after getting new discs and pads fitted. All the dealers in my town have gravitated to two roads. Am not sure how many dealerships I passed but what I did notice was I did not see one purchase price on a car window. "Drive this car today for £*** deposit and 48 months at £***" is all you see. Some dealers are at this game with their second hand stock too. Could start a 2nd thread "Wanna know what a pre-owned car costs?" but hey, life's too short.

It's not just purchase - I was following a load car from the local VW dealer today that had "servicing plans from £3.18 per week" lettered across the taligate.

It's marketing. The smallest possible number wins, ergo you promote the monthly instalment solution and get that as low as possible with a deposit fudge etc.

I'm sure that if it worked better they would advertise the cost on a per day basis.

Besides, nearly all cars are bought on credit so it's probably daft to quote the outright purchase price.

In Newbury there's about 4 or 5 dealers all nearby. Ridgeway Volkswagen were offering 'servicing plans from 99p. Less than a cup of coffee per day'.

I particularly like the way they write in huge letters "drive this car from only £XXX per month*"; and then below in a two-point font they state that the deposit is what turns out to be 90% of the list price of the car.

Majority of new cars are bought on finance so that's the important number. Very, very, few people have the £20k in their pocket for a new car with the kit they want.

To save it would take so long that the cost of the finance is a worthwhile compromise and if they already had it you can bet there are other things to pay for before a car.

Why not just ask someone how much it is or pick up a price list?

Most people buy on finance so the purchase price isn't the deciding factor as they'll trade it in in 3/4 years. When I used to sell cars the most popular question was "how much is it a month", it's the way the market has gone/ is going.

Problem is that the way they display the costs makes it hard to compare deals and that makes the market inefficient ... it makes it harder for consumers to make informed decisions.

How about require them to display the AER and the net present value of all of the customer's payments in letters no smaller than the ones they use to show the monthly payment? Might make a few people think a bit more clearly and explain why dealers are so keen to get you signed up to the finance package.

yes - I notice certain large dealer groups are really bad for offering high APR finance with low monthly payments, big deposits and even bigger final payments!

My list of things I will do when I become very wealthy indeed:

- Change my razor blades every day
- Eat just the centres of Danish pastries, not the edges
- Buy a new car for cash

Since some 90% of new car purchase are done on finance it does seem to make list price irrelevant and the deposit / monthly / balloon the most important figures.

So why do dealers need to show list price?
