On the shortlist: "I would keep my car and so I'm looking for a quick car, a GT, a convertible, a quick classic and a big workhorse. A few compromises in here but delighted with the final five!"

Ferrari 456

Why I chose it: I have wanted one of these ever since seeing one as an impressionable teenager and hearing the driver properly pin the throttle away from the lights and hearing that V12 wail. The lack of a manual is thoroughly disappointing, but I will forgo that and the ideal spec tan leather for the looks and the noise. Four seats to take the family would make it the ideal continent crushing GT and who knows - I might even be happy with the auto then...

Porsche 911 964
Cost: £27,950

Why I chose it: "Number 1 on my list. This would have been a lot easier 12-18 months ago when decent C2 manual coupes were £12K and upwards! This has always been the dream car for me though and once bought I would probably set about the chassis, engine and interior to make it truly mine (but long past the statute of the £100K budget so it doesn't count right?).

Mercedes 500SL
Cost: £4,900

Why I chose it: "In an ideal world this slot would be filled by an SL Pagoda but they are £80K plus. Second choice was a Peugeot 504 convertible but none are currently listed in the classifieds. So behold - my favourite convertible (sort of)... I loved the shape when they were first launched so was keen on an original orange indicator model with a big wafty engine. Plus at £5K, if the reliability isn't as bombproof as obviously expected from an early 90s Mercedes, I could probably just buy another one."

Alfa GTAm Evocazione
Cost: £29,995

Why I chose it: "This one was a very pleasant surprise. An Alfa was absolutely top of the list for a quick classic, but my favoured GTAs were somewhat out of my price range sadly. But then this one really caught the eye - I would hope that what lies beneath is as stunning as the outside but this would be a lot of fun on the track and road I hope, and if it went wrong? I believe that is what Alfa cliches are made of.

Range Rover Vogue
Cost: £7,450

Why I chose it: "The brief for this one would be - drive through any weather, tow anything, lug anything around, never get cleaned and gently woofle about the place with a sense of ownership of any road that I can't imagine not having. I briefly flirted with L322s 'priced to sell' around this point but much as I love those, the lure of the classic won out (the actual reality of a £7.5K rangie may not match this idealistic interpretation, but similar to the Merc above, this could be replaced at fairly minimal cost!).

"Then with some of the loose change rolling around I could look into some Fuchs for the 964..."
