Useless Remote Key Fob

[Negative Creep]

The remote central locking in my car has a range of literally centimetres, and that's only after several button presses to either lock or unlock. I've tried changing the battery and resetting it as per the handbook but that has made no difference; even holding it against my head changes nothing. The light comes on so it doesn't seem as if the buttons are sticking. Any ideas what I can try? Car is a 98 Celica and the remote is not the infrared type

Similar fault on my sisters Pug 30? is the receiver module - about 200 sheets so she didn't bother.

Do you have a spare you could try to confirm it's the fob? (I assume you've thought of that). Other than that a Toyota forum?
