Sound of new M4

I'm sitting in a BMW showroom whilst my car gets serviced and a new M4 has just started up.

It sounds awful. It was only idling and I imagine it would turn into a nice howl under hard acceleration but it sounded like a large moped. You can tell it wanted to be a loud sound but was going through severe sound deadening. It didn't sound like a V8 either. Is it still a V8?

Just checked and it's a twin turbo six.

And worse for it.

Its a I6 bi turbo now

The M5 is a v8 bi turbo

Did any of the previous M3's (same thing as the M4) has threads about the exhaust sound?

I suspect no.

Are manufacturers doing their best to make their cars sound good? Yes.

Things have moved on, blame H & S, blame the environment lobby, blame the government, blame the PC brigade.

Will people enjoy the drive - I think so.

Will BMW sell even more M 3/4's than the prior model - absolutely.

Not seeing good comments from launch yet. Bit of a contrast to the noise the press made about them.

That sounds much better than the car outside this showroom but still doesn't sound as good as the V8 M3‘s C63‘s.

Maybe I'm just getting old....

Heard an M3 and M4 being put through their paces in Madrid a few weeks ago, sounded very ordinary, especially after an RC F had been started up a few minutes prior - now that sounded properly nice

most modern M cars sound very weak, the M3/4 is probably the worst of the bunch

it is very disappointing and a shame when AMG's and RS Audi's still all sound fabulous

and its not down to the turbots, the C8 RS6 sounds every bit as nasty as the AMG mercs and the B6 biturbo RS4 sounds excellent as well (and the RS3 sounds epic)


for some reason BMW seam to have abandoned great engine noise in the new cars and prefer to con the owners with synthetic speaker sound

its a real shame as i find the new M4 a very desirable (and affordable) thing

Sometimes I follow a white 1M Coupe in the mornings and it sounds absolutely fantastic wrung out through the gears - plenty of howl.

I suspect idling in a showroom is not the best place to hear an M3 though. Both the old E30 M3 and E46 M3 weren't exactly a nice noise started at cold idle

Unfortunately this is the price of progress.......but tbh many would choose compromised piped cabin engine sound rather than eye watering joke mpg figures, especially from the E90 and 92 M3 V8s 'manuels' not helped of course by their ridiculously low 6th gear......

I suppose one could always get the best of both worlds and buy an E46.....

Bear in mind however that even the normally aspirated Lamborghini Hurracan V10 has piped cabin engine sound....how dissappointing is that......

i occasionally get to follow a M6 near me and it sounds very weak on full chat compared to a C63 AMG, you can hear AMGs burbling away next to you at lights with the windows up and the radio on loud lol

that is bitterly disappointing, and baffling since the V10 makes a glorious din, even in the R8

I would agree with that. From what I've seen/heard so far I prefer the sound of the 1M.

I need to hear more of the M3/4.

What the hell is this forum's problem with symposers? They aren't fake, they're just giving the ACTUAL sound of the intake in to the cabin. It means you can have good general NVH for road noise etc but maintain engine noise.

I had a new M4 in front of me a few days ago and thought the engine sounded much better than expected.
The noise when shifting sounded a bit strange but just about every new car with a fast dual clutch transmission sounds like it passes vapors with every shift.

In a few years time everyone will glorify this car for being the last non-hybrid M3 and thus the "last real M-car"

Give it a couple of years and you'll all be waxing lyrical about it, and how much better it is than the last one, as has occurred since the M3 E30 big bang...... ;-)
