help with a car I bought. may be wrong place sorry

Hi I bought a ford fiesta 1.2 petrol 2007 last week. In the first few days the clutch pedal stopped working completely it would go down and only slightly come back up etc had to get to work by moving off on the starter motor then matching revs. I took it to a garage who looked it over and charged me 300 quid to fit a new slave cylinder and the clutch is perfect now. But I have heard from the previous owner that it could have been a small clip/piston on the clutch pedal that broke and the garage ripped me off? How could I tell if the gear box has been out etc. Thankyou

Why did you not take it back to the garage you bought it from?
EDIT - i'm guessing its a private sale, so its up to you to check the condition of the car as its sold as seen and if not pay someone to check it AA/RAC local mechanic etc.

I guess its repaired now and its working so just drive it!

Yeah I understand that I bought it as seen etc and it was checked my a mechanic but these things happen just wanted to check I haven't been ripped off that is all plus I only paid 499 for car

I paid £995 for an average mileage 2002 fiesta... Was yours used as a moon shuttle by it's first owner?

I swear it was 499 quid 105 thousand mile on it no mot or tax few bumps and scrapes bought from a friend who's family lived in Devon and he goes down every other weekend hence the milage

Mine used to stick and needed a quick fiddle to get it working again.

I realize this isn't the type of advice you were after, but if you buy a car for less than £500 it should be because you know how to fix cars or are looking to learn how to fix cars.

Symptoms of hydraulic leak, but IMHO £300 is a lot of money, while not familiar with the Fiesta per se usually clutch slaves are quite accessible and no gearboxes would need removing, it's an hour's work or being generous, two.

Quite a lot of slave cylinders are inside the belhousing, I'm not familiar with the Fiesta but if it is, thats not an unreasonable amount to fix it.

Ino Andy gonna get it fixed up and run it a year and hopefully when I sell it I will end up not loosing anything on it

Part60 quid 4hrs to change which is gearbox out at 40 quid an hour been over charged by 80 unless they changed the clutch at the same time which most mechanics would do while it was out. But 500 quid for a 2007 fiesta yea ok.

Haha its fine if you don't belive me about what I paid. What I'm asking is there a way to tell if they actually had the gearbox out or if they just changed piston thing on clutch pedal
