Advice please - Buying a used car in Germany and importing

Hi. I'm buying a used car privately in Germany. Can anyone offer any advice on things to watch out for?
I have a UK specialist going over to do a mechanical inspection so I am more concerned about making sure all the paperwork checks out, it's not stolen etc. Is there an equivalent of HPI?
Does anyone know of a UK agent who knows their way round German paperwork?
Finally, is there anyway to protect myself when I send over a deposit? The seller has asked for a 40% deposit which seems too risky to me given he is a private individual.
