I am due in court for a speeding offence which I am highly likely to be banned for a period of time for. I know it was wrong and regret doing it so much, I'm just after a bit of advice in regards to my insurance.

Do you have to tell them as soon as your banned or wait till renewal?

Would it be better to cancel the policy myself rather than have them cancel it on my if they won't carry my policy on?

Thanks in advance, this is my first post and I know I have done wrong. It's my first ever offence and I know I have to deal with the consequences so just looking for some help on this matter.

Wait to see what the judge does with you first and go from there.

And welcome.

I am sure you already know this but:-

Make sure that you outline the needs of a driving license. For example I have heard of cases of being let off from a ban if they have a dog (it needs a vet visit for example). If you can't do your job without the aid of a car, public transport is unviable then they may look at community service instead. You will in case need to inform your insurer. If they find out at a later date they may well not pay out.

If your banned simply cancel it.

/end

Don't forget to sorn/sell/get a third party to insure it though.

Let's have a little bit of a think. You serve your ban, and you get your licence back. Two months later, you're involved in a collision. Your insurer asks to see your licence.

What do you think their reaction'll be when they see a ban they didn't know about...?

Unlikely to cancel. Very likely to ask for extra premium.

Okay thanks for the advice, as much as I want to believe I'm not getting banned I think it's highly likely I will be due to the circumstances. My solicitor thinks it will be 6 months but could go either way.

I think I will cancel the policy and sorn the car as the tax runs out the same month anyway.

Are you selling the car when you're banned?

In response to this, what if my 6 month ban ends in the month my insurance policy ends and don't drive it till a new policy is started? If I do get 6 months then there will only be a matter of days between getting my licence back and renewing my policy. Would I still be able to use this years no claims discount if I was to switch insurer?

It could be a possibility, but I have downsized in cars from the car I was caught out in so may be worth keeping to keep my premium down.

You might want to speak to your insurer about having it insured for fire and theft only while you are off the road (if you get your licence taken away, of course, and I sincerely hope this isn't the result in court). I think it's called a "lay up' policy.

The last thing you want is your car being stolen off the driveway when you are unable to use it. Salt in the wound etc.

I had my licence revoked on medical grounds for 12 months in October. It was suspected I had fallen unconscious although there is no definitive proof, no cardio or neuro issues at the time, but I was difficult to wake and groggy when awoken although asleep for some hours and probably in REM sleep. I hadn't slept for a couple of days and I believe it was extreme fatigue; I just couldn't stay awake any longer and had pulled into a car park to sleep (rather than falling asleep while driving). Gutted.

Anyway, the point is that I had a lovely 550i and I decided to sell it...I didn't cancel the insurance while it was being sold in case it got stolen and in fact I kept the policy running after it was sold so that I would gain a full year's NCB.

Their reaction will be absolutely ziltch. Providing the ban was after your last renewal and you didn't have the prosecution pending at last renewal, they won't care. They will however care at your next renewal, which is when they have the right to set new terms for the upcoming annual contract.

No-one really needs to know, other than the OP, the judge and perhaps a few select others quite why he might be banned

OP - you can get laid up insurance, if your car's going to be off the road for a while some insurers will offer a fixed fee. It will need to be off the road though, driveway/garage etc. Last time I did it I think it cost £35 for the year, just incase of fire or damage etc

I don't mind telling you why, although I'm not proud if it and the result from being caught has definitely had a positive effect on my driving now. It has really given me a wake up call.

I was caught doing 110 in a 50 zone. I know it sounds rather silly but it wasn't over a long period the police car that pulled me crept up behind me just as I had a little acceleration past another car but as I went to overtake on the dual carriageway they put their foot down too. My car was quite a bit quicker than his so the police car dived in between the two of us and only pulled me and in the summons there are allegations of racing but only from the police officers "opinions". They didn't even care to get the reg of the other car but still want to say I was racing. As I said before I have now sold the car in question which I put a bit of money into as I felt I had to punish myself for reaching that speed in the first place.

All I can do is hope for the best.

I will look into that sort of cover but I don't want my insurers to know I'm banned then they cancel the policy on me. Because when I've done dummy quotes online and tick the box "have you ever had insurance declined, cancelled etc?" nobody seems to want to give me a quote. So that's why if think I should cancel it myself.
