RE: Porsche 956 at Spa: Time For Tea?
Thursday 26th June 2014

In the comments section for this onboard video there's a little conjecture over the actual driver for this Porsche 956. But regardless of whether it is Stefan Bellof or not, it's 10 minutes of the most absorbing onboard footage you will find.
Porsche 956 at Spa: Time For Tea?
Scary circuit, scary car, captivating video

Every corner, every straight, every lap passes quicker than expected. At the old Bus Stop chicane and La Source the cars seem almost stationary compared with the outrageous velocities they're achieveing at Blanchimont and down Kemmel. Revs flare on downchanges and the whole car's attitude seems angry; it requires real effort to drive very fast. See also from 7:25 for some heroic opposite lock out of Bus Stop.
Um, and that's about it really. A 956, Spa, and one rather talented driver.

It is either Jochen Mass or Jacky Ickx, I suspect Ickx as he wore red gloves and typically started.
I suspect wrong, bit more digging and it seems it's Mass. This of course was the race where Bellof lost his life in the incident with Ickx at Eu Rouge and the in car from that shows him in blue gloves.

epic film footage, very very brave and fearless, saw them real time and this footage brings back this pinnacle of this finest racing.
thanks for putting this up.
S.B. (rip) was very brave and too good to have been lost in that accident, remember he had a spell in F.1. - think that is correct but someone will correct or detail his achievements in that spell.

Epic driver IMVHO, a great loss :-(. We only just got a little peek at what he could have done in F1. E.g. finished 3rd in the 1984 Monaco GP http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqdM6RtqZ4Y . rhinochopig said:
I was amazed to find out the other day that the '62s were fitted with a spool diff.
Did you watch the clip on the 962 with Norbert Singer? He talks a bit about the choice here: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=1&a...The sheer speed from about 5:50 to 6:10 is absolute lunacy! These cars have to be the most violent sounding things to turn a wheel at a track. What on earth is that striped (Martini-liveried?) car that rockets away from the Porsche like the 956 was standing still?! Is that the Lancia people are talking about?
Though I've always been partial to the '60s, more and more I've been realising that the Group-C era was the true golden age of endurance racing.
I don't think I'm alone in requesting Please PH more Group-C articles/vids!

Lovely cars and seriously quick but the noise is typical underwhelming turbo flat 6 - not a patch on the Ferrari 512S, 312PB and Matras from early 70s nor on the wonderful sounding Mercedes C11 in the 90s Though I've always been partial to the '60s, more and more I've been realising that the Group-C era was the true golden age of endurance racing.

With Audi, Toyota, Porsche & now Nissan sportscar racing is hopefully getting back to its popularity during the Group C years.
IIRC the year Bellof was killed he wasn't actually a Porsche works driver at Spa so that would rule him out of driving the Rothmans 956's, was definitely a big loss to racing!
In reference to Lancia's being so quick, that was all to do with them turning the boost up for qualifying, they where always near the front for the start but never seemed to last very long in the race.
