City of London to become blanket 20mph zone

Only saw this whilst researching routes for a tunnel run, the whole City of London, (mainly the financial district for non-Londoners!) is to be a 20mph zone from July. Not seen it on news, or any other newsy type places and judging by the lack of repsonses to the "public consultation", not many other know about it either. I only usually drive through the City at weekends, when there's no traffic whatsoever, so its going to be pretty irritating to dawdle along swathes of empty roads...especially in the TVR!

"The streets of the City of London will become a 20mph zone in July after the Planning & Transportation Committee voted to implement a 20mph speed limit agreed by the Court of Common Council on September 12th 2013. This follows the public consultation which ran in January and February 2014, to which the City received 41 responses, 29 in support and 12 against.

The 20mph speed limit is part of the City’s Road Danger Reduction Plan, which aims to reduce the large numbers of casualties on City streets. It is predicted that the new speed limit will reduce casualties by around 7% in a cost-effective manner."

I don't doubt that this will result in vast amounts of fines being issued and no change in casualty rates whatsoever. Yet another reason never to venture near London, awful place.

i Don't remember a time when I was able to do 20mph driving through the centre of London.

The whole of Islington is a blanket 20mph limit. It gets ignored.

I can see it being the same as Islington. 20mph limit but nobody sticks to it (including the police) and the bus timetables aren't even changed to take it into account.

My area was a pilot 20mph limit area in Bristol; now applied across the city.

Really happy with it. I'm not a driver the whole time.

Bristol isn't blanketed.. yet. 20 around schools & heavily built up areas I understand, but on places like Hartcliffe Way are ridiculous at 20. Even the Cyclists can be seen touching 35 down there. On clear, non-built up areas 20 is ridiculous. (IMO)

Same here. I'm more often on a bike or on foot. Happy with the 20mph limit where I live and will be just as happy with it where I work.

They imposed a 20 limit where I live. Aside from a rash of additional signage cluttering the streets there hasn't been any difference, nobody takes the slightest notice.

Umm, it's the City of London. Not "Greater London". Just the square mile.

Much of Dublin city centre has an 18MPH limit, but it also generally gets ignored (although not by me of course )

It seems to basically be pedestrians not looking where they're going when they cross the road at somewhere other than a proper crossing, and a tripling of cyclists numbers.

This is a good thing. It will slow the trucks and buses and bring the average speed differentials between all modes of road transport into a more logical frame.

Hopefully they can then extend this to all side streets out to Zone 2 and slow down the short cut monkeys from out of Town.

The fastest ways across the City will be unaffected (cycle and tube). And I doubt mopeds/motorbikes will be affected in reality either (even if they are in theory).

There are speed cameras around there though...
