Am shortly in the market for a larger family vehicle, SUV size, and am on a budget. It will predominantly be driven by my wife who will be ferrying the two <4 year old kids around and shd be wide enough to carry another adult in the back
Budget is £13k maximum, we'd prefer cheaper if possible. Prob paying by cash.
Choices narrowed down to an ASX or perhaps an Antara (I know, not very inspiring)
Would like something not more than two years old with minimal mileage on the clock - reasonably cheap to run too if possible.
Thoughts?

Hugely uninspiring but my wife has a five year old Nissan Note. Can fit our two young 'uns in the back with grandma too. Seat config is useful. 1.5 litre diesel does about 64mpg (computer readout). Loads of toys (satnav, folding mirrors etc. etc.) Rear seat slides backwards and forwards very easily which is good dependent upon whether you are carting kids or adults around. 100% reliability, British built......
There is a recent new model out which should be below your budget.
Not desirable at all, but my wife loves it!

+1 for the Note. The neighbours have had two and they've loved them. I drove theirs once and while it wasn't a long trip, it felt solid to drive. As Mike said, uninspiring (I would imagine taking it on the 'ring would be somewhat comical) but as a tool it seemed like a good buy. Neighbours haven't reported any problems with either of theirs.

Yeah a second gen X-trail, Freelander 2 or X1.I should also say that I feel an SUV is usually worse in every way (except if you have back or joint problems) than the saloon equivalent. That's just me though.

Well, the Note has been ruled out (don't ask)
Been to see an ASX at the weekend and to be honest, can't find fault with it for value for money at the price for a nearly new one.
Anyone driven one extensively (from a day to day, practicality point of view rather than how it handles as it will be mainly driven by the wife to ferry the kids around although it'll be a weekend family car too)?

The Nissan note isn't that large, but as you've now discounted it that doesn't matter!
Have you looked at the Nissan Qashqai?
You'd easily get a newish one of those (less than 2 years old) in your budget. A new model has just come out or is imminent, so that could mean you get a better deal.

The main problem with the Qashqai from what i've seen is the back seems to have just two seats with the middle third bit being raised rather than flat - admittedly i've not driven one but i have peered in the window of a few - plus we can get a specced up less than one year old ASX for the same price; the Qashqai at that age would have to be poverty specHave you looked at the Nissan Qashqai?

Sounds like it's the ASX then! Mitsu's are great cars, the nice thing about the ASX is that it's likely to be rarer, Qashqai's are very popular (i.e. potentially a common sight)nstar said:
