As the subject suggests - got a mate who is going to emigrate, does not want to sink a bunch of money into a car, but has to lug his wife, MiL and 2 small kids about.

Thought Fiat Multipla, but they seem to be rocking horse droppings?

It's the 2.0 engine so chain driven..... and does not eat Turbo's.

240BHP so fast enough to make the MiL hate him? Check.

I couldn't find a E55 AMG with 7 seat option in our budget, but they do pop up every now and then

Much as I like them if he really needs 7 seats then a multipla is no good (only has 6 lol)
If he needs 5 or 6 seats and a big boot then a multipla is fantastic.
I ran one for 60k miles with only a failed crank sensor (under £40 fitted) and a broken spring (fixed under a recall).
If the kids are small and boot space is the priority then the back seats can be moved forwards turning a decent boot into a massive one, I would recommend the diesel purely because the petrol feels a bit gutless.

The Multipla is great if he can find one, I looked at the Espace but the build quality was dire, I test drove four low mileage cars and they were all literally falling apart so I bought a Fiat Ulysee, it was very good, masses of space, much better built, nicer to drive and surprisingly reliable. The Peugot and Citroen versions are the same underneath but differ visually.

Honda FRV is a Great 6 seater....go for 2.2 Diesel which can be remapped too..
