Snobby car salesmen good for business

I have seen countless threads on here complaining about snobby car salesmen. It seems that there might be a sound business reason for their behaviour.....

I love walking around John Lewis with beans on my shirt. Rarely left unaccompanied by a man with a wire in his pants.

Can certainly see it working with a certain type of person, wanting to prove themselves to beat the salesman.

Although equally I know a couple of people who've been told they "can't afford" the car or whatever, and have then gone and bought elsewhere rather than trying to prove anything.

Beat the salesman by walking away and buy the car elsewhere, then call back and let him have the warranty work.

I've seen this in action a few times. Including one guy buying a significant amount of champagne just to prove a point (mainly that he could afford it). I'm not sure which was more mind blowing the logic or the bill.

Doesn't everyone look that that ooop narth? Mind you, anywhere that John Lewis is seen as the pinnacle of retail aspiration must be a bit special.
