EVO - well, as an ex-print industry employee - I have been subscribing to EVO for donkeys years, and will probably do so for the rest of my life, ahaha! It's one of the few publications these days, whom haven't sold-out cheaply, in an ever-competitive paper-based market.
They still subscribe to decent, quality journalism, with proof-read and error-free text, beautiful, well duplicated photography, presented on nice paper stock, and printed with real care and pride. I love it.
Top Gear Magazine? A mere ridiculous, advert-heavy, commercial comic IMHO...
I've found myself having the same gripes with EVO recently as many other PHers on here.
To be honest it's still the best print magazine for petrolheads out there that Im aware of, and Ive shopped around a bit.
EVO really just fills a gap for me, providing something extra over all the online content I consume. Even though I own an iPad and a bloody huge phone, I still enjoy having an EVO waiting in the bathroom for me, especially if Ive over-indulged at the local Indian restaraunt the night before.
Tried the iPad app incidentally, looks slick and works reasonably well but for some reason is never quite as satisfying as having a mag in my hand.
Top Gear f*cking sucks these days. Can't really work out who TG magazines' demographic is. I can understand a broad spectrum of people casually watching the TV show on a Sunday evening, but it is such a naff read for anyone who considers themselves a 'true' petrolhead, and surely non-car people aren't picking it up?
If the guys that make/ contribute to something like /DRIVE could put together a good glossy mag it would do well IMHO. Features like 'What car would you buy for $xxxx' and some nice historical pieces, mixed in with some insightful Motorsport features and I'd be sold.

Octane and Evo for me as well by subscription and Classic and Sportscar.
I enjoy them all although thee is a uniformity to Evo that is starting to wear thin. Which is a shame as I remember reading the first edition of Fast Lane back in the day and have pretty much stayed with it throughout.

I had a four-year subscription to Motorsport but didn't renew it when they put all their archive issues online after I'd paid to buy the CDs. Now they're treated the same as every other motoring magazine; I do a weekly browse in the newsagent and if there's something of interest I'll buy the magazine it's in.

Bought Practical Classics recently and thought it was quite interesting though - some good articles.
The worst kind of magazine are most road cycling mags (which I bought for a few months) - just full of adverts and the same stuff month after month.

I'm still a bit of a magazine junkie, I subscribe to EVO, Octane, Classic & Sportscar, CAR and Auto Italia. They all seem to have their ups and downs but I just prefer reading magazines/books to staring at a laptop/tablet/kindle. CAR started it all off for me in the early 80s and in my opinion it's currently back on form. EVO isn't as good as it was but still mostly a good read and I never tire of the the classic mags although Octane does make you feel like you should have done better at school or been born with a silver spoon in your mouth.
Read Evo from the first ever ECOTY test (996 won it to give an idea of when this was), and gave up on it a few years ago - maybe just me, but I find the stories increasingly pointless. I want a print version of PH - far too much of Evo seemed only to apply to people with huge amounts of money to spend on their cars.

ks.I buy far too many but only one is essential- Motor Sport. Written by writers who can write(Roebuck , Taylor, Nye and Arron especially )for readers who can read without moving their lips. Proper length features- up to 5000 words- instead of the bite size factoids which most titles use- because I assume their readership mainly has the attention span of an ant .
EVO- it's ok but its writers seem to live in a parallel universe where wrecking a set of tyres in an afternoon is routine and where blowing £1000s on a different exhaust for some daft supercar is 'money well spent' . Catchpole writes well, as does Meaden .
Octane- OK but I could do without the nauseatingly smug Robert Coucher's musings on fine wine fuelled touring adventures with his celeb mates.
C and SC- good honest magazine catering for all from D Type owners to Viva enthusiasts.
Car- a pale shadow of the brilliantly iconoclastic magazine it was in the 60s- 80s. It had wonderful design , terrific writers and great features. Now ? Pathetic ,badly written drivel..if not as bad as the parody that is Top Gear- people buy this sh*t?
Autocar- excellent writers- Cropley, Sutcliffe and Goodwin but content uninspiring.

Mags:
1) Practical Performance Car - FFS, finish a project now and again, and bloody well proof read. And set fire to that 'DeltaPig' thing as well: what a waste of column inches. Otherwise, not a bad read, if a little rough and ready
2) Classic and Sportscar - Good read mostly, but again, I find some of the featured cars a little obscure, and even though I kind of like that, it's wrong kind of obscure for me.
3) Octane - hardly ever read this for the reasons described above - too 'lifestyle'. Staff seem odious. Shame - photography is usually really good.
4) Retro Cars - read this now and again, when there's not too much stance and stretched tyres. Some interesting off-beat cars now and again.
5) Practical Classic - read this when there's a car I'm interested in featured. Like the 'DIY' slant. Some really nice home-done restorations featured. Some cars are just not classics for me though, but I suppose 'Practical st heap' doesn't have the same ring to it.
6) Land Rover Owner - I don't own a Landy at the moment, but read this over LRM. It's a bit "Let's off-road", but it's very responsible about how it views green lanes. My feeling is that it will struggle once JLR drop the Defender and move wholly into 'Luxury' cars.
7) Performance Bikes - best bike mag by far, but pages seem to be made of bog paper, and not exactly fat these days.
8) Classic Bike - nice mag - sometimes a bit 'beardy'.

Just Practical Classics now, overall it is fine, but the talking up of the classic bubble really annoys me - come on we have all been here before. Speculators come in, prices go stupid, a very small number of people get lucky and sell up, bubble bursts, loads of people start to look for someone to blame for speculative decisions they made of their own free will!
