You know, the neighbour or pub-goer with a layman's knowledge who, if you pulled up in a P-plate XJ6, would assume you've won the lottery...
Besides the shed-jag, what else can you buy for, say £10k, which would get the curtains twitching?

I am amazed you can get a car like that for that sort of cash these days, that is a really good shout IMO.I'm thinking a VW Phaeton, but they are probably a bit too discreet to really get the curtains twitching, so I'll have to opt for a Merc SL500/CL500.
Taking the budget down a LOT, a few people have commented on my car being expensive (1998 E46) when it is worth nothing.
A few people at work have come out with "you must be doing well" when I have given them a lift home, and a few looks of surprise when people ask what I drive and I say "an old 3 series".
It probably helps that it is always kept clean and looks good, but I wasn't expecting the reaction considering it is an S reg. I remember just after I got it I was filling it up and the guy in the pump in front of me said "I hope you are having fun in your Dad's car".
Very strange, and I have never had any other reactions from strangers at petrol stations besides the occasional "nice car mate" from someone driving an equally ancient BMW.
Just to clarify, we are talking about 6 or so people in two years so not exactly a regular occurrence.
A set of clear indicators, big wheels, and a private plate and I am sure it would fool a few more people.

But I love an early start in my wife's Mx5 (which has an exhaust with an interesting note). If I can't impress them, I'll just wake them up at 4:45 am like I did as I drove down the shared driveway, and gave it a couple of blips on the throttle, as I thought it was going to stall (wife and kids have mentioned being woken up too - tough s
t really).
