2009 Fiesta 1.2 - Views?

Since my son was born 4 months ago my girlfriend has been struggling with her 3 door Yaris.
The doors are too big to get his car seat out in normal sized spacesand the boot is almost non existant.
She has seen a 2009 ford fiesta 1.2 5 door for sale at a local garage. Priced just over £5k. Neither of us have ever bought a car on finance etc but right now we're really needing something more suitable for her so needs must.
What are your views on these cars? Common problems etc?

I think these are a perfect run around car.
My sister has owned one from new, the only thing she dislikes is the dashboard which is covered in buttons.
Aside from that, it's good. Everything still works including air con and iphone sync, reasonably economical & all it's ever needed is normal dealer servicing and tyres.

Price seems a little high for a 2009 car, unless it's a decently-specced, low mileage example.
Biased view but consider a Nissan Note as more practical sprog transport. Huge boot and sliding rear seat mean prams etc will fit. Or a Honda Jazz, although they hold their value more than the Nissan.

Girlfriend had one from new from '59' to last December.
Was a 1.25 low output 5 door style, so boggo spec...
It didn't put a foot wrong in the time it was owned (serviced once by mr clutch at 18 months and me 2 years later when i realised it hadnt been done). It handled well but was understandably gutless. Had friends kids in it (isofix) and she's a nursery inclusion for SEN kids so harder etc and took the seats without issue. Room for a buggy in the boot (but not much else), hers had 46k when we sold it just before Xmas for £4750 (£5k asking) and was slow to sell, time of year I think.
In the whole time it had front pads, a clutch (all C.London and she was riding it...) and 2 front tyres (sold when they were bald).

The wife has a 1.25 Zetec (2012, pre facelift). Pretty nice car. Not very quick (her old 1.4 had a similar output but felt quicker as it seemed more torquey) but quite revvy. OK to drive - very light controls etc Nothing has gone wrong, fallen off etc and the qulity and build is a lot better than the previous 2006 model we had before.
Interior is quite funky, on board computer a bit fiddly. Aircon really good but accompanied with a very noisy cooling fan on full blast!
Reasonable space in the back for car seat without having to put the front passenger seat right forward, but the boot space isn't that massive. We had to buy a small travel system thingy to fit (they are all huge these days!), and even then it needs a wheel taking off to get in.
A good car. Alright to drive for what it is, cheap to run, reliable etc.

Wrong! You have a child therefore you must buy the biggest 4x4 around or there is no way you will fit anything in, and you will be scowled upon at the school gates in a few years, a Q7 S-Line with the largest wheels and tinted windows should do the job...

We had one, it blew the head gasket at 20k. So check the heater pipe that goes across the inlet manifold is clipped in properly, if not it gets cut by the fan shroud & dumps all the coolant. Then because it's a bloody silly idiot pandering gauge that stays at 'normal' then jumps to hot you don't get any warning before it causes damage.
I wouldn't get another, I hated the position it put my legs in. The offset throttle twisted my knee & made me limp after 30mins driving.
