Multiple number plates swapping?

Just wondering if anyone is clued up on swapping private plates?
I recently bought a car that had a private plate on, this belonged to the last owner. He bought a range rover.
I have my own plate on retention.
All the documents were sent off together by the garage. So the plan was my plate would go to my new (to me) car and the old plate would go to the range rover.
I have been checking the online tax checker and as of yesterday the last owners plate is now showing up as registered to the range rover but my plate is not showing up at all. The Car i now have is showing as taxed/MOT'd but on its original 54 reg.
Is this the way it happens and my plate will take longer to show up or will I be getting the paper work back and be having to send if all off again to get my plate put on the my car?
