I've done an HPi check on a car the missus wants to buy, I think it's ok but there's interest registered against a previous plate but judging by the dates of the plate transfers the write off was on a personal cherished plate before it was transferred to the vehicle I'm looking to buy but I'm not sure!

If anyone can clarify I'd appreciate it, last thing I need is a load of ear ache smile

HPi Check -

Plate Transfer
The current plate was transferred to this vehicle on 21/12/2006
S8CAS was applied to this vehicle on 19/07/2004
This VRM has been recorded as being written-off
The insurance write-off was recorded on 02/05/2004 against a SUZUKI JIMNY
GR03OBJ was applied to this vehicle on 01/08/2003

As I said, judging by the dates, the write off was recorded on a different vehicle as the personalised plate wasn't transferred to this vehicle till after the write off?

Cheers!

Presumably the car she's looking to buy isn't a Suzuki Jimny? (what the hell is that!)

Yes it is a Jimny, that's what's making me think it's a bit dodgy, going by the dates it seems ok but I'm a bit concerned it's the same model of car. Oh n a Jimny is a little 4x4, trashed in the reviews but seems to be well liked by other owners!

Walk away.

There's bound to be another one around without the questionable provenance.

Normally I'd walk away without a second glance but the missus is quite sold on the car and it's a pretty good spec, the price could be better (especially if it actually is a old write off) but she really wants it.

I've promised to give HPi a call tomorrow to clarify the details but thought I'd ask on here if anyone can help, save sitting on the phone for hours on end smile

I've had that before, it does mean the plate was on a car which was written off at the time and doesn't mean this car was written off.

In my case it was a different make of car so was quite obvious, but in your case I'm pretty sure the car was written off, the owner then got their insurance money and bought another Jimny and applied their plate to it again - not an unreasonable thing to do.

Looks to me like this vehicle has been written off.
The written off VRM was during the period it was attached to THIS car.

Car was repaired and put back on the road with new plate.

I disagree with the above, as the timeline posted by the OP is NOT that of the plate, but the CAR.

That's what I thought GreigM, going by the dates the write off occurred before the personal plate was applied so must have been on another vehicle, just with them being the same model gave me a doubt.

FeelingLucky, the personal plate was applied after the date of the write off.

EXACTLY:-after the car was repaired and put back on the road.

Remember, the timeline is that of the CAR not the plate.

it doesn't really matter what the actual story is from your point of view.

you will be unable to flog it at non-cat price unless the history gets sorted. ask the seller to sort the history

FeelingLucky, wouldn't that mean that the original plate would have the write off logged against it? The HPi said the original plate is fine, no interest against it.

Think of it this way, the person you try to sell it too will be asking the same questions you are now, assuming they don't exclude it from their considerations entirely.

Unless you get it for a pretty low price and/or are prepared to answer the same questions you're asking it'd be far easier to find another car.

edit: Is the personal plate on the car now? Is it being sold with it? If not, I would've assumed the history will be updated to reflect that the plate that was once on the car (personal one) had a write off marker. If it were that easy to cleanse the history wouldn't everyone do it?

Durzel, to be honest, I'm not fussed, I just know the missus will be gutted, I'm quite happy to walk away, after speaking with you all I think I'm gunna have to disappoint her and tell her to keep looking

It sounds like you're willing this to happen though, so best of luck.
not forgetting the insurance company. you will have to persuade them as well.

No, you won't as they understand how to read an HPI report.

To be honest the chronology of it does seem to suggest the plate owner wrote one off and bought another one, switching the plate over to it.

If you can convince yourself that the current CAR checks out, then that's probably good enough. I'm presuming the value of the car isn't several thousand anyway?

If you missus is sold on it, and it's roadworthy, go for it I guess? Just bear in mind the history will follow it around and you'll be faced with the same questions and uncertainty. That said I imagine the difference in value would be negligible after she's owned it for a bit?

(I know that's a bit of a departure from previous comments)

Durzel, the car is being sold with the original plate on it, I'm convinced the actual car isn't the one that has been written off going by the dates, to avoid an argument I'm going to ring HPi tomorrow anyway but considering it's probably gunna be difficult to re-sell later on even if the history is innocent enough I'll try to convince the wife to look elsewhere.

If you can forward the HPI report to me I will clarify it all for you - I work in car finance and run a dozen HPI checks a day. Chances are, if the HPI report doesn't say that car is written off, that it's a different car that had the accident. Email it to me to richardf@meridian-finance.co.uk, or fax to 01342 301466, or just upload here and I'll check for you.
