diesel saloon with some poke

Im looking to spend up to 6500 on a fastish (by diesel standards) car with a good comfort factor.

So far ive seen the following.

Saab 9-3 (or 9-5 i cant remember) ttid
Ford mondeo st 2.2 tdci
ford focus 2.0 tdci titanium
mazda 6 2.0 tdi

I was also looking at the old shape fabia vrs but the interiors are lacking.

Any tips of relability, best bang for buck? Mpg when driven hard?

Theres also a mondeo 130bhp but not many of them

If you want something fast-ish and a diesel really any german saloon with a 3.0 diesel is for you they all do about 7s to 62mph. Mercedes, Audi and BMW all made 3.0L diesel saloons with about 200hp and 300lb/ft I don't think any are bad really but diesel Audis seem to be recognised as understeery cars. That's safer and fine on the road but not fun on a track I guess.

Insignia CDTi 160 SRi is fairly pokey and very comfortable. In budget too although 09/59 onwards had a more refined engine and some niggles sorted.

What about the Alfa 159, choice of 1.9, 2.0 and 2.4 JTDM which coincidently has the same engine as the Saabs and Insignia mentioned (1.9 amnd 2.0).

Are the alfas not badly unreliable?

This really is a superb all round car great handling fast and will return good economy.
No cam belt to change light on tyre wear DPF lasts 150k service intervals but changes depending on use it can be more or less mine indicated 150k when I bought it and then 60k miles later it still appeared to be the same interval.


The 335d will be our of budget but you can remap the 330d up to 335d levels which is plenty fast enough.

German 3.0 6 pot diesel. They have poke, not the wheezey 2.0ltr farts worth of turbo shove 4 pots (although the newer generation such as the Merc 250 cdi are getting close now...)

You asked for fast ish and bang per buck. 330d E90 is the answer.
