10k Dilemma, 987 Boxster (2.7) v Audi TT v (2.0) v Anything
Discussion
I want some summer fun and I have £10,000 burning a hole in my pocket to splash out on a sporty coupe or convertible. What would you guys recommend?
As above, major contenders are 987 Boxster or an Audi TT MK2. I've had experience of both, having owned a TT from 2008-2009 and they a Gen 2 Cayman (2.9) from 2009 to 2011.
After the Cayman I has a new C250 as I needed a nice car for business use and got a good deal on lease and i'm now running around in 55 plate Accord Tourer (just has a baby).
the wife is going to keep the accord and we will use it as an everyday run around, long trips to Portugal etc.
The main reason for consideration of the above is that I feel safe with Audi and Porsche (yes i've looked into RMS and IMS) I know what to expect and I know they will be fun (based on my requirements). I'm probably seriously lacking some adventure here and thought i'd put out a post to see what you lot would recommend as better alternatives.
Not worried about MPG or practicality. I just want a really fun car that meets my budget requirements and hopefully wont depreciate too much.

The obvious recommendation, especially given the hauling down to Portugal part, would be one of these:

Edit - although probably with different tyres. I can't see winters being great on the Algarve.

Quite how you can be considering a new TT when the criteria is fun is, frankly, beyond me.
I'm not sure if you have driven one, but I'm assuming you have and didn't find it 'fun' by your definition. In the time I owned it I thought _image aside_ it was a cracking little motor and great value for money. Z4m and 350z, I must admit I haven't considered. I'll look into these.
Out of the 4: Boxster, TT, Z4m and 350z - which is likely to best hold its value?
Elise, I've never driven but I've been in a VX220 and it was a back killer for me. Plus, I intend to use this for to get to and from the office... I'd love an Elise but would always live in fear of ripping my trousers getting in and out (it happened getting out of of the VX220 once)

There's a car which:
An Rx8 of course!
- will attract zero unwarranted coffee beans from other drivers, unlike a 987. Brucey bonus, you also wont get called a flash obi wan kenobi at every set of traffic lights by WVM while he's wearing no t-shirt and having only a couple of teeth left
- will handle better and be more fun than a TT (even with that brilliant 2.0 engine)
- It's more practical than both of those (real rear seats for 6ft3 people)
- It's newer than a £10k 987
- It's £7.5k cheaper than any £10k car
An Rx8 of course!

Z4M. Best out of that bunch, and it'll hold it's value better too.
A decent Z4M coupe (much rarer than soft top)would be 14k plus but you would get a very nice Z4 3.0 coupe for 10k. I think they look great and there relative rarity makes them very desirable in my book- plus supposed to be a cracking drive with a peach of an enginemikeyr said:
As an aside, how much do we miss 300bhp's input to these threads. I wonder where he is now...and what type of Americana he is peddling to the uneducated masses that don't appreciate Ford F150 trucks.
Think he's been binned for good. Shame though, he was good for the entertainment factor Edited by mikeyr on Friday 4th July 15:42

You most certainly don't want to spend 10k on a Z4 or 350z... At least not until I've decided which of the two I should get!
I'm currently leaning toward the 350z - they seem to have the usual excellent Japanese reliablilty combined with vaguely sensible running costs & outlandish performance.
Finding a 3.0 Z4 is also quite a challenge too - there's not that many around, especially at non-stellar mileage.

I would say that there are more Z4's around than 350Z's, but I guess they arent all 3.0 ones, all 350Zs are a 3.5, no 2.0 or 2.5 ones to wade through.
I do like my 350Z, it hasnt cost much in the last year, I had to replace the exhaust but I knew that was needed when I bought it and meant I could justify an SS system. Other than that I self serviced it and changed the pads and its been faultless. It is heavy on juice, normally 20 mpg on Super but I only tend to put a tank in a month with my mileage, will do nearer 30 on a run, the Z4 is much better on fuel. VED is £500 but insurance is only £274 for me, depreciation seems to be very low once they get to six years old.
I do like the Z4, has a nicer interior than the 350, performance wise, I think there is little in it, 350 is more powerful but a bit heavier, the 350Z will have a slight edge but pretty negligible, 350Z has a standard LSD (well UK cars do). 350 is a bit more of an extrovert, someone on here said its a bit like a big daft dog on a slippy floor, which sounds about right to me, Z4 is a bit more sophisticated, that isn't to say the 350 isn't capable, it is.
Both really good, drive both and see which you prefer, quite a hard choice.
