weird clutch issue , 306 hdi
Discussion
about 1000 miles ago i moved out of a side road rather sharpish , i was in second gear .
i soon smelt clutch . it was apparent that my clutch was slipping . the car has done just over 100k and i had joked about it failing in a big way now it had covered such a distance.
having researched how much it would cost to replace , an awful lot . i decided to just drive more carefully whilst i saved the money for another clutch / car .
now since this occured i have driven the car every day , although more gently than i would . the strange thing is that the clutch does not appear to be slipping any more . i checked only last week by applying W O T whilst in 5th gear and it was slipping.
so could anybody explain how it would appear to have fixed itself ?
sorry for the long boring post

I've just been through the same thing, pulled out onto an uphill road and attempted to accelerate at a considerable rate. However, the only thing that happened was the engine revved wildly and the car pottered along at 20mph. I realised after the fantastic stench of burnt clutch entered the cabin what had happened and drove somewhat gingerly the rest of the way home.
For the next few weeks, the clutch seemed fine, but when driving spiritedly the clutch would slip at high RPMs, but normal driving was fine. Anyway I knew i had to bite the bullet so I spent a long weekend replacing the thing (another story entirely). The old clutch wasn't horrifically worn, but the flywheel and pressure plate were badly burnt from the slipping. The concentric slave cylinder was also pretty gubbed as well.
It was obviously worn enough that it could no longer hold on when the engine was putting out a lot of power, but lower down it was still hanging on. After changing the clutch it's like a whole new car and you can really feel it bite, especially at gear changes.
It's not cheap though, especially if you have a dual mass flywheel, which you may as well replace if you have everything out of the way. Coincidentally my DMF was gubbed anyway and was rattling about when accelerating. In total for a new concentric slave, clutch plate, pressure plate, dual mass flywheel and some decent gearbox oil it came to just over £500. This is for a Corsa VXR however, and you have to remove the subframe to have any chance of removing the gearbox, so I ended up bursting both ball joints on the wishbones on both sides so add on another £123 for wishbones and my total came out at over £600.
And that was me doing the work myself. Vauxhall wanted nearly £900 for the clutch and flywheel replacement.
