Getting car deposit back

Yesterday afternoon my husband rang about a car to a main dealer of well known make. He asked if it was still available bad could he take it for a test drive.
When he got there the car was having work done in it and the wheels were off so they took him out in a similar car. Got back to showroom and they then told him he needed gardx etc etc and he left a £500 deposit.
He rang me from outside the garage and said he'd done it etc and I pointed out gardx was not required having previously been flogged it for my first car. He went back in to cancel the gardx but was told he couldn't.
After more thought he rang them and said no to gardx and they said it would be cancelled.
He's hardly slept overnight worrying and now alarm bells ringing re the car. He wants his deposit back, hasn't driven the car he's left the deposit for, not good customer service really.
Can he get his deposit back? If so how should he go about it?

I didn't go with him, think it's because he missed out on a similar one and didn't want to miss this. It's a grand more than the one he missed. The car is still advertised for sale on the web so he's going in as soon as they open to cancel.

Pretty sure you can get the deposit back as you've notified them to cancel the paint protection pretty quickly.

When you speak to them be calm and brief, tell them you have reconsidered and would now like the deposit back. Do this as soon as you can. Even though your partner has signed the documents confirming purchase there's still a x day cooling off period where you can return the car.

Are you sure? I thought that if you signed the documents at their premises, then there is no cooling off period in law.Tim

Similar happened to me a few years ago now. I went into dealership to discuss it with sales Manager, I knew he wouldn't want to see me or see sense, and in this occasion it was because their finance company wouldn't touch me. So I took two great little weapons with me.
Weapon 1 was my son and weapon 2 was my nephew both 8 at the time and told by me run riot boys.....got my money back in cash in about 5 minutes.
It was a bit like obtaining money with little menaces but did the job. You have to think out of the box with these w
kers.

After seeing the car he's looking for it's being prepared.
Goes out in a similar (but completely different) car
Pays deposit on a car that he's never sat in, pays premium for pain protection system (but it's backed by mike brewer, so will be awesome)
Get's home, bottles it but somehow this is poor customer service??
