The WBAC thing

Ok, we've all done it. Seen a 'desirable' vehicle for sale on PH, and popped the reg no into WBAC, and it comes back at half the asking price. So assuming you're still interested, what's your next move. Ring the guy/dealer, and tell him he's way over priced. Accept that WBAC is useless for nitcht vehicles. Agree to pay the guy 20% overe WBAC price? Or forget it altogether. Recent example. Audi RS6, 2003. WBAC value £6240. Seller wants £10,495

I have also never done that and never would - how ignorant... As a car enthusiast (i assume) you should know that WBAC is 8/10 times totally oblivious to market value for non-run of the mill cars.

Obviously not. Seen all the TV ads telling me how much better than a part exchange they are though. Please educate me.

The seller is likely to be very rude to you....put a lotus elise S1 in and it will offer you 40% of its true value.

WBAC are not an authority on valuing specialist vehicles, in fact as its not their market they are clueless

They never claim to pay more than a part ex, only that they may enable you to get a better deal.

i.e. "Sell us your car for even less money than you'd get in part-ex, and then use the fact you have no part-ex to negotiate a better deal on the car you are buying".

Err no, it's a stupid way of getting an idea of price. The dealer will laugh in your face if you offer him £7488 for the car he is selling for £10495.

WBAC operate by giving low offers to people who want to take the pressure out of selling the car. As the owner of the car, you accept the lower price because it's (supposedly) zero hassle. You can't then use that price as a guide to buying from someone else. On top of that you're looking at a dealer car that I assume comes with some kind of warranty and a good level of preparation and checks.

I gauge what I want to pay based on what other similar cars have sold for. It doesn't take long to work that out.

Ask yourself, will WBAC sell you a RS6 for £6240.

It could work but it doesn't work for specialist cars like an rs6.

Thats the long and the short of it really.
