Mercedes E220 (10-13) Auction Tips

Hi Everyone. My First post on piston heads so go easy please 
I am looking to buy a E220/E3350 (2010-1013 plate) AMG Kit Preferable having done plenty research on Autotrader etc i am now considering whether its worthwhile trying at auctions to pick up a bargain on a car of this type and if so which auctions would be recommended for this sort of purchase. The budget is around 15-16K. Can someone give advise if the two cars below seem worth it and if going to auction how much can saving can i expect? Thanks Guys

First one posted is CAT D and the second is poverty spec I would avoid both personally

With regards to auction with buyers premium etc... would rather just buy privately to be honest as doubt will cost a lot more and more chance of getting a well looked after car with nothing wrong.
Auction for me only makes sense when buying £4/£500 sheds really

6 months ago I bought an E350 Sport S212 2010 on a 60 plate with 35k miles, Palladium silver /black leather.
Before doing so I test drove a 220 SE and a 350 Avantgarde.
Thought the 220 was a nice car but as this is my first MB I realised having driven the 350 that there was no contest, it had to be a 350!
I was looking for an Avantgarde but soon realised that there are far more Sport models out there. Also I didn't want black.
Because of back problem comfort is the overriding factor. I realised as soon as I drove the Sport that the side bolsters on the seat held me in place better giving my back an easier time, also couldn't really notice any difference between the Avantgarde and the Sport suspension as regards ride comfort.
6K miles later and having just returned from a 2500 trip to Italy including lots of mountain passes as well as motorway and I have to say this car is more fun than my Chimaera 450 that I had.
There is always more power than you need, the seats are superb, in fact everything is superb.
On the way back we did 1000 miles in two days driving on the motorway all the way at 140K where we could, (2 drivers) it returned 36.7 per gallon, and I do use the acceleration, its compulsory!
Do get one with Command, it's very complicated but learn how to use it and reap the benefit. It even tells you when approaching a toll booth.
Obviously if you are going to do lots of miles the better consumption of the smaller engine has to be considered but for my 12K per annum not an issue.
So, a great car, take your time, drive a few, and you will not be disappointed.

Edited to say mine has the 18" wheels, I have a mate with the same car with 19" wheels, wishes it didn't

I know what you mean but surely that "I might be about to crash if I'm not careful, ahhhh" feeling is part of what makes a car exciting and therefore fun?

(Alcartantara) seats were fabulous - very comfortable and grippy. I though the ride on 18's was very good - as good as the ride on 17's on my old 211. The only slight downside was tyre roar which was a little louder than I'd expected. Really liked the pointy steering round town (don't know if they all have variable ratio rack of it's just the Sport?).
From the outside the wheels, exhausts and other bits of trim really lift the car IMHO. From side on and rear three quarters especially I think the Sport looks fabulous, esp in black. One of the best MB designs in years to my eyes anyway.
The only two downsides were that the black/black/black interior was very....errrr..black. A glass sunroof or even better a pano roof would have been the icing on the cake.
And the 250 4 pot is a bit gruff to my ears. But it you're used to diesel 4 pots I'm sure you'd be fine with it.

Personally I would avoid auctions. I live only a few hundred yards away from a car auctions so regularly visit to have a mooch around. I have to say I'm amazed at how high the prices seem to be. Nothing much in the way or bargains. On many an occasion I have jotted down the selling price and added in the fees and found cheaper examples for sale on here or on Autotrader.
Add in the extra risk of not actually being able to take it for a test drive or leave it running for a bit and I would say you are probably better off doing some homework and picking up a well looked after car in the classifieds.
