Anyone got this engine?

Looking at a 58 plate volkswagen jetta its got 67,000 and has a full vw service history.

Is this engine reliable?

Does it have a dpf?

I have a 140bhp transporter, 115,000 miles so far without any problems.

It's torquey enough but has a very flat torque curve, so never feels that torquey. It's nice and smooth for a 4 pot diesel

Were all the problems in the pd engine?

a 58 plate will have a DPF - a certain run of these engines (around 2005 age) had oil pump issues which can be a major P in the A - They are generally reliable in the grand scheme of things, you really need to look at journey type and the sort or mileage you'll be doing with regards to the DPF

I do a good 15-20 mins on the motorway a few times a week, when do dpfs need replacing as a service item?

I didn't think DPFs ever needed replacing??? Isn't that one of the reasons why they are so expensive if they fail?

Some of the early VAG 2.0TDI engines suffered from porous cylinder heads, but it's worth remembering that when this engine was first developed it was a unit injector (PD) only engine, it wasn't fitted with common rail until a few years later when teething issues with the engines had been resolved.

Also worth nothing that a lot of the 2.0TDI PD engines didn't have DPFs (there's a decent chance I'm wrong but were DPFs only fitted to the 170PS version of the PD engines?).

I think they were fitted to both

58 plater has DPF and is common rail so a little bit smoother than the earlier PD engine.
Oil pump problems were on the balancer shaft engines fitted to passats and A4s etc.

Good engines and mine averages over 50 mpg daily on the motorway and has given 60 mpg at times.

Jetta is a very complete car too. Huge boot, nicely built and makes a good motorway car at a good price too.
little things do go wrong at times. I've replaced the throttle body, bonnet sensor, bonnet catch can seize up (easy fix) and a CV boot split. Dual mass flywheel only lasted 50k miles despite it being a motorway car only. Had mine 4 years and will happily keep it for a couple more.

Full history could mean a service every 16k+ miles which isn't the best. Go for the sport model for the better seats, wheels and suspension.

Nice engine and quite a good improvement over the PD version. Far smoother/ quieter and more reliable. At its best when combined with the DSG 'box.
