Car for the missus?

The usual what car type thread so sorry in advance.
Mrs. FF has little or no interest in cars with notable purchases such as a Suzuki Ignis to her name. She actually went without a car for a couple of years but has had intermittent use of my old diesel Yaris whilst I've indulged in a couple of barges over the past few years.
With a couple of kids now the Yaris really is a little on the small side and less than ideal being a 3 door. She does very few miles, maybe 5000 per year so petrol would make more sense. Decent economy is a plus as she detested running a Saab 9-5 (although loved the car)
Are any of the small mpv's worth a look (Scenic, Picasso etc) or should I just seek out a 1.6 Focus or suchlike? Zafira looks ok for what we need or are they best avoided.
Small budget, maybe 2k. Would like something with a good rep for reliability as it'll be kept for at least a couple of years.
As an aside, I haven't fully gelled with my Alfa 166 Super and can't see the relationship being a long one. Any thoughts on the LS430 for barge duties??
