My secondhand 330ci with 30k miles on the clock was £15500 from a BMW dealer; 3 months later with 1k-2k miles extra and still in pristine condition, the same dealer quoted £8,000 trade-in.

The two big ones that hurt me was my old X5 4.8is paid 20k at AUC 17 months later chopped it in and got 10k for it and my E92 M3 had it 10 months paid 30k chopped it in for 23k...I am having a little rest from losing money hand over fist now though and its taught me nobody seems to want a V8 anymore nowadays!

managed to get £1900 for a 9 year old mazda 6, some diesel variation with grey interior and 54k, biggest heap ever so slightly over the moon with their valuation, especially against a 3k car!

Although £1400 for the other halfs 8 year old focus was a downer!

C class Mercedes paid £23,000 for it at 6 months old, 0ffered £13,500 12 months later,although to be fair it had listed at £36500 when new, so Merc took a bigger hit than I did, and I had put 35000 miles on it.

I had various quotes from £1200-£1500 for my Clio 182 which was a superb example. I sold it shortly afterwards for £2800 and I still think I let it go too cheap .

Dealers & traders seem to take no account of condition, tyres, service history, recent big jobs done etc they just pick a number from the book. If you have a beaten up maltreated dog of a car then the quote can be quite good, if it is a nice pampered example that has wanted for nothing then the quote is inevitably a joke. I look after my cars hence they are sold privately every time for at least 1.5 times what the trade in price would be (more often at least 2x).

Dunno, but I once swapped my old Ford Escort that wouldn't turn over and had more rust than metal for 3 pizzas. Are we doing this right?

WBAC offered £50 for my Volvo 850 T5R. Was in decent nick.

Didn't accept the offer, didn't moan about it, wasn't a car they wanted to sell so I sold it privately quite a long time later.

Always wondered though how much they would mark it down when they did the inspection or if they'd have stuck with £50...
