Barnsley to Basingstoke

I've got to drive from Barnsley to Basingstoke on Thursday for a job interview. I'm planning on setting off at 9am to get there in plenty of time for the interview which is at 2pm. Google Maps says I should expect it to take around 3 hour 30 minutes. Is this realistic? And what sort of traffic can I expect?
At that time you will be fine barring any accidents. If it were me I would take my primary route as:
M1 > M69 > A46 > M40 > A34
As a backup:
M1 > A43 > M40 > A34
Lastly if those two are screwed
M1 > M25 > M3.
I used to do this run (from M1 J22) on a regularly work trip and about 2:45 was normal. Another 45mins puts you at about J30, so I'd say 3:30 - 3:45 from barnsley

I've never been there before. And I'll be stopping down there through the week and coming home on weekends. The job is a massive career improvement and a decent pay rise over what I'm doing now. Otherwise I wouldn't ordinarily apply/be interviewed for work so far away from home.thole Hi, I travel from Southampton to Newcastle and back very regularly, and use the M1, A43, brief hop on the M40 for one junction, then A34, for your part of the journey. Been doing that for literally years now, usually reasonably trouble free during the times you need to be travelling. Oxford has a 50 limit through it, and there are various average 50 limits seemingly scattered all over the country at the mo, but shouldn't make too much difference to your trip.

Festival place must be one of the best mid size shopping centres. Also has a load of restaurants. Shopping centre is excellent. Undercover - easy to get to, park and get out of

The above don't really compare. Luton was a once thriving place that died, Hemel/Basingstoke/Harlow and co are all appallingly designed concrete nightmares built in a fortnight after war.
Basingstoke isn't a pleasant place, but you have to remember the OP is in Barnsley now, so it's not going to be something out of the ordinary.
Swap the countryside and cheap cheap lifestyle for roundabouts , concrete and southern prices, and he'll hardly get a culture shock.

naa its fine like any other place really. But you do get chavvy kids calling it amazingstoke......
Its not a bad place to live. When I first moved here (20 years back) it had semi decent night life. These days though .... its just a relatively sleepy modern town.
The councils plans for the town are pretty comprehensive. Lots of typical new developments, the M3 junction is going to be made into some godawful burger junction for improved access, new Waitrose and John Lewis, top of town is going to be heavily redeveloped into a larger pedestrian area.
OP - good luck with the interview.
I'd say 3.5 hours is a bit optimistic as well. I travel from Basingstoke to Sheffield sometimes in that time, so add Sheffield to Barnsley. Not far, but could make a difference.

I've done it from Sheffield and it took me 4 and a bit hours, it's do'able under that, but tbh it's not your top speed that'll be the limit, it's every clown on the road infront of you
PS - I used to live in Alton, which is just down the road from Basingstoke, and a much nicer part of the world, but I still prefer North.
