Anyone else noticed how Porsche...

... exhausts sound better than they used to?

I have never been a fan of the exhaust note of Porsches (I am excluding the Carrera GT and race cars from this sweeping statement ) as they always sounded a little flat (pun not intended) to me even with aftermarket exhausts but in the last few months my opinion has changed.

The other month whilst on a hoon round some local B roads I was lucky enough to be in the perfect place at the perfect moment. Going the other way was a bright orange GT3 RS which was (momentarily) stuck behind a Morris Minor. He floored it right next to me and my god it was like thunder . One of the best sounding road cars I have heard in a long time.

The other week I heard a new Cayman (unsure which designation) which had a wonderfully deep, growly tone when pottering around which turned into a howl as the revs climbed with a few complimentary pops and bangs on the overrun. On the way home tonight a 14 plate C4S which just sounded purposeful - not excessively loud no flatness just a quality sound of muted power - very nice.

So to sum up with road cars becoming (supposedly) ever more soulless and silenced it is refreshing to see/hear the Germans are raising their game.

I think my 996 Carrera with sports exhaust sounds great, but when I drove a new 991 Carrera s with switchable sports exhaust I found the pops and crackles a bit too artificial.

Very pleased with the exhaust note on my 2013 Cayman S. Tried the PSE at Silverstone and didn't think it worth the extra.
