Used Tyres

Quick rant.

There are many used tyres littering round where we walk the dogs these days which always drives me mad. But I became real frustrated when I was cleaning out my outhouse, had a three or four old tyres that were pretty worthless and I didn't have the car that they used to belong too. So I loaded them up to take them to the dump like a good little citizen, I ask at the dump what to do with them and they tell me not here mate.

I was then advised to dump them over the fence of a disused tyre store / factory just down the road. So back in the outhouse they go then!

What should a responsibly person do with them!?

Next time you get any tyres put on, ask if they will take a few additional old ones.

Alas it cost money to dispose of these legally.

Take to tyre fitting place and ask about disposal.......dependant on price be prepared to pay for them to go.

Most places have tyre disposal down as a cost when you have new ones fitted anyway!

Tyre place, Kwik Fit, Mr Tyre, National, F1. They'll probably charge you for disposal, I copped for £20 for a set of 4 old ones

I get your point, OP - some of the policies at local tips seem to be designed to maximise fly tipping.

The council has to pay to get rid of them. I know as I pay that bill.

I have been to my local HWRC and have disposed of old tyres the correct way. I did only have 1 tyre.

If they have enough tread to pass an mot then put them on ebay.
I've sold quit a few tyres this way.

In fact, when I get new tyres I prefer to keep mine to sell on.

Collection only, cash on collection.

I took two to the local tip today, big cage marked tyres in the recycling area with shoes bottles clothes etc.

Mate who owns a garage pays £1 per tyre for disposal, a firm comes around and collects when he has about 30 tyres stacked.

Tie a rope around them, tie them onto a tree - behold! kids toys. Or give them to boat-people to put on the side of their boats so they dont mess up the hull when mooring them.

Yep. When I was drifting I often got free tyres.

For diposal I found my council tip was happy to take them one at a time. Or my friendly tyre chap would let me swap dead ones for ones with tread on his pile.

That's fair enough, but -

1) I would be happy to pay at the tip, sorry HWRC, (if I had tyres to get rid of).
2) I have no doubt the Council has to pay for other things it offers "for free" in order to help the community - it seems turning away legitimate folks trying to do the right thing is placing unfair obstacles in the way of proper disposal.

It's a weird one as I took some old steel wheels to the tip a couple of years ago which I'm sure still had tyres on - I asked the guys which bay to chuck em into and they didn't bat an eyelid and pointed at a certain bay which I dutifully heaved them into.

Have you got another tip in a neighbouring town where you could try? For example after a quick Google, Brighton & Hove say you can get rid of tyres in Hove, but not in Brighton and apparently only two per month. Not quite sure how they police that... but there you go...

Wrap em in cardboard, take them back to the tip one by one, then when the tip operative isn't looking put the cardboard in the appropriate skip, and hide the tyre round the back. A bit devious and time consuming, but it might just work?

Ours doesn't charge but probably some do. We don't charge for anything, like plasterboard etc... that most do.

As for being turned away, that's just stupid. Perhaps they didn't realise that you can tip tyres. That or they just don't care.

When I went to tip my tyre I mentioned above, I was told that the HWRC was shut. He let me in when I pointed out that it didnt close for another 5 mins & it wont take that long to dispose of a tyre.

My local council's web site says that each household can dispose of 4 tyres per year.

Some consistency would be nice...

Of course, you probably have family and friends who will never use their tyre disposal allocation.
