If no-one knows about them it's costing nothing.

I know 2 wrongs don't make a right, but you should see how many UK-registered wrecks are running round Normandy/Brittany.

2 years ago we stayed at a B&B run by an English couple. They ran an old Discovery and another car. Both tax discs were several years out of date, and they weren't MOT'd (I asked). They did however at least pay French insurance (or at least said they did!).

In answer to your original post, many foreign-registered cars probably cost their owners more in tax and insurance than they would if they were registered in the UK.

If I could pay UK prices I'd be running a Ferrari/Aston/TVR with a big V8. Over here it would cost me nearly €10500 a a one-off registration fee, plus nearly €3000 per year in road tax. Insurance is also more expensive although the UK is rising fast (whiplash claims etc.)

I saw a 4x4 yesterday on Andorra plates. No UK tax disc but it did have a National Trust 2014 membership sticker!
