One of my friends has purchased a 10 year old vehicle and now has run a check and a marker has come up as insurance marker stolen. The marker is from over two years ago and when she has contacted the person that she bought the car from he said that when he bought the car from the previous owner it was declared to him that it had been taken with the keys but returned by the police. Where does this leave my friend? Surely if the insurance company had been looking for the car then they would have taken it back from the previous owner who bought it from the person that claimed the insurance? Could it just not have been updated on hpi check? She is calling hpi check people tomorrow to try and contact insurance company, she is terrified that the car is going to get taken. Would they let her keep the car if she pays towards it? How does this affect her own current insurance ? Surely she would not have been given insurance if there was a problem. All other documents check out and no stolen marker from police. Any advice would be helpful please.
It's most likely that the insurer hasn't changed the mark on MIAFTR.

That's the best she can do, if it is a genuine unrecovered stolen car then she's an innocent purchaser.
The insurer would own the car and depending on what they decide may allow her to buy the car back off them.

Thanks Zollar. Will the hpi people tell her who the insurer was as she is the second owner since? Do you know if the hpi people can see the whole story of the car? If she gets to keep the car is her insurance still valid if its stolen recovered?
Sorry I thought she knew who the insurer is, if she calls HPI they will speak to the insurer to see if the marker is correct or not.HPI won't be privy to the circumstances to the theft, however they're largely irrelevant it simply comes down to whether the insurer has paid out on the car or not.
I see no reason why her insurance would be affected, however there is no harm in checking.
It maybe worth her calling 101 and advise them of the situation and see if they can check the police national computer to see if it shows stolen.
Thanks. Police check is showing as not stolen so either the insurance company paid out and have not been told the car was recovered by the police or hopefully the marker has just not been updated. It would have only been picked up when another claim was entered for the car.It's not viable for an insurer to carry history checks on every vehicle it insures as it's too expensive.
If the police are saying it's not stolen then the most likely scenario is that the marker hasn't been removed.
It can happen quite a bit as it relies on human input.
