Never really proven.
but quite a flawed concept. A four door hatchback with large overhangs when even Audi were considering a two door sports car in the same vein as the RS200 to replace the ur quattro.I love it all the same, especially the huge cutouts for the rear door handles.

Yes, we can only dream about how incredible the next generation of cars could have been. The Audi Group S car is a tantalising glimpse of what may have lay in store.
Group S regs were going to be very similar (engine location aside) to what we got with modern WRC cars to be honest - limited to about 300bhp, spaceframe under a production-look shell. Most likely would have been less dramatic than Group B.GravelBen said:

Group S would've been too extreme . Audi Sport S1 Peugeot 205 T16 EVO
Lancia Delta S4
Ford RS 200
MG Metro 6R4(purely for sound)
Pug 205T16E2 was easily the best all round Group B rally car, which is the verdict from those drivers of that era that have driven them.
Technically the Delta S4 was possibly the best, but only one driver ever tamed it and that was Toivonen, and it good points and very bad points claimed his life.
I suspect, had Group B not been banned the Evo version of the RS200 might well have been up there with the Pug and Delta given how it feared in the post-ban rallycross era. The Delta in comparison was terrible in that discipline, with Alamaki dumping his works Delta for a works 205T16E2 the following year and then wiping the floor with everyone.
The Audi's were madly insane, but were struggling with the others greater developemnt by the time of the ban.
The Metro was a great car in many ways, and was oh so close and was another 'what could have been' had Grp B continued into 1987. It was always going to struggle in the power stakes though with it's n/a engine, despite being one hell of an engine.
My list then,
1. 205T16E2
2. Ford RS200
3. Metro 6R4
4. Lancia 037
5. Audi Quattro S1
6. Lancia Delta S4
7. Nissan 240RS
8. Citroen BX 4TC
