Ive decided im buying a car with a pd130 engine in due to reliability, mpg and mid range torque.

If i buy one with 100,000-120,000 miles on its a hell of a lot cheaper than buying one with 80,000 on, do the ancillaries on this engine last for much longer or will i end up with all the big bills?

Also is remapping at 100,000 miles plus a daft idea or would it be ok if i only went to 160?

I thought you said high miles?

I bought my 02 reg A4 with a 130pd 10 months ago for £2k with 158k on the clock. Just had its MOT 2 weeks ago, passed with no advisories and is on 183k now.

My friend has a 51 plate Passat with the 130 in and the engine is still going well at 290k. Other bits are getting a bit tatty and the fuel consumption isn't as good as it once was but it's still plodding along.

Ive found one which has been serviced by a main dealer and its immaculate, but only 7 services in 100,000 miles so about 14,000 between oil changes, will this be bad?

Most modern diesels should cope with 20,000 miles between services.

Don't the VAG's have variable servicing these days, so could be 30,000 between services?

One of my cars, a diesel has 20,000 mile scheduled oil change or every 2 years.

If the engine is running fine, and the turbo is not whistling then should be no problem.

From what I've seen variable servicing can allow maybe 16k miles between services but certainly not 30k.

I figure the 1500 less it will cost cud be a subsidence for turbo/clutch failure.

If the turbo isn't whistling i would be worried, as it isn't spinning.

Brilliant engines the VAG 1.9d all versions. 130 does seem the best and with a map really moves.

Running a Seat Ibiza 130 with unknown map, absolutely flies in real terms and actually likes to rev too. Guy claimed 170hp but no receipt etc with the car.
Previously had a 115 Passat, turbo died at 180k, spent not a penny in 8 years of ownership bar servicing.

Had two. Both in Octavia flavour. First one crashed at 177k without a major bill. Second one I sold at 158k, again nothing more than good oil every 10k miles and the odd MAF!

The wife ran an a3 with on in, bought on 118k and sold to our BiL on 160k, it ended up with a SMF to replace the DMF but all in all that was. £350! Bargain.

Mate has one in a bora that he traded at 262k and it never had a major component go wrong. He is big into preventative maintenance though and at 190k had a reconditioned turbo fitted.

Lastly a mate currently has one in his Leon. On 180k and still going strong. He gives it dogs abuse and therefore bits are falling off and his turbo is now noisy. But he has driven it hard from cold and never cools it down, since he bought it at 35k!

Great engines. Go forever. Look after it and it'll never throw you a big bill.

I bought my 2.0 tdi Leon new. It's now on 110k. Serviced every 10k, with fresh oil and filters, and timing belt / water pump on schedule.

It blew the turbo at 80k, but other than that everything else on the engine is original.

I had a Passat until 144k

Biggest pile of st I've ever had the misfortune to own.

Whilst the engine is pretty good you can be sure it will be plagued with problems and will fall to bits.

Don't say I didn't warn you.

Have had a few in Passat and Polo and much as I hate these 4 cylinder VW engines you can't argue their economy and long life eg the passats I've had at 160k have been fine and still on original turbo and clutch,

100k with fsh is nothing for these engines.

Lets say a car is 4000 pound on 100,000 miles, what would be a rough price it would be worth in 3 years and 40,000 miles on the clock if it stays in good condition?
