Really don't know what car to get next...

Yes I'm a culprit of browsing 101 other 'what car' threads that actually give me great ideas, but I'm still no closer to narrowing down a list of 3 or 4 cars to look at as my next purchase.
A super quick car history which is purely hot hatch...
In an ideal world I'm looking for something relatively practical, comfy and with a few toys too. I'd like to try keep things no more than around £20k and I don't mind considering finance for the right option as it's probably the best way of getting into something reasonable. The only thing I've seen at the minute that I'm off to have a drive of is the new 2.0l Ford Focus ST3 estate - I really like the looks and the positioning in the market between practical but with a little performance that won't leave me totally cold if I do want to open up the taps.
I've started to see some B8 S4 Avants popping close to this territory as well which I like the idea of - and I've even been eyeing up a VXR8 of some sort... even going to a Mk2 Focus RS and getting back into that 5-pot warble! Although my mileage is around 15k per annum, I still prefer petrol and so long as MPG isn't ruinous on longer runs, then I'm fairly open to suggestion. Might be worth noting but I do require to carry passengers from time to time and a guitar + amp stuff too...

20k gets you a TVR Chimaera for fun and a BMW/Passat estate for practical use.
OP, I too would go the two car route - that way you can be more demanding of each car's role. But if it needs to be one car only, then the B8 S4 you mention would be top of my list. Also look at a previous model BMW 335i touring? Although the new F30 is out there, the e90 family are still very good cars.

There are some nice options within the budget, or close to, and that's what's proving difficult. I'm still swaying towards the one-car route for now (just because of the bike related things I'm looking to do)... however, I'm going to look a little more at the two-car option as I might be able to get something then that really does tick all the boxes (just across two cars).
V10 M5 and B7 RS6 would be lovely! I do worry slightly about the upkeep of such epic machinery (had a good read of the relevant threads surrounding both) but it's something to consider! My old man had the S8 with the 5.2l V10... and they're dropping within budget as well!

There is one on AT now. Private seller, 2008, 72k miles, priced at £22.5k. Might be a scam though? I'm not close to C63 pricing so not sure. But the ad seems ok. There are half a dozen cars less than £25k.

I've had a poke around a current gen Focus ST (Mk3) and liked it - though I think I'd be silly not to wait for the facelift if I did go down that road.
I've also just got back from driving a Golf R (Mk6) which was better than I expected it to be. It was quick in a very isolated way - had to look down to see what speed I was doing and I LOVE the DSG box.
Going to have a poke around some BMWs in the next week and just generally try what I can so I'm making an informed choice. The only outsider at the minute is a 159 Ti which had some of the nicest seats I've ever sat in!
