Taxing new car

Hi all. New here and this may be in the wrong place. I'm after someone with car tax knowledge. My partner and I bought a car from a dealer on Wednesday. The dealer had recently got the car on a part ex and was awaiting the log book and mot certificate. He told us that the guy he bought the car from and sent it to him yesterday (Tuesday), so was expecting it any day. Given that it is a registered business and that the car had been hpi checked by both us and them we took him at his word and bought the car. The tax runs out at the end of the month and he said if for any reason it doesn't arrive in time he will sort it for us. I have text him today and he doesn't have the documents yet so now I'm a little worried. My main question is, if the documents don't arrive how can he possibly sort tax out with the documents? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Ultimately there's a procedure to apply for a registration document from the DVLA. If you google it you will soon find the gov website to do it.

But if I buy a car without the reg doc I assume the worst.

This bit sounds very odd.

I suspect it has had a plate change. The last owner swapped the plate over when the px'd it and the docs from Swansea will be sent to them and they have to send them onto the dealer.
