If you put a deposit on a new car on the understanding that the deposit will hold the car until funds you are expecting are available, when would you expect the car to be registered - immediately or after you have confirmed the funds are available? At the point of placing the deposit, no delivery date was agreed upon.

They will provide you with a reg no and a document to sign (V5C I think) you must then provide a cover note so the car can be be registered.

Car was registered 3 days after placing deposit, without our knowledge that this was being done.
After 2 weeks, notice was received to say that funds would be delayed. This notice arrived within 1 day of the logbook arriving. Receipt of the logbook was the first we knew about the car being registered.

Car should be registered on the day you collect, unless otherwise agreed. You will have had to sign a Conformation of Registration form prior to it being legally registered to you.

Was this registered at the end of a month by any chance?

If the car is now registered to you, won't you need to SORN it or end up with a fine?

I suspect the car will be registered at whatever point suits the dealer's bonus scheme best!

I think you mean an AFRL Document, which ensures that the vehicle is registered to the correct name and address and that everything is spelt correctly.

Nope - not anymore. It is no longer the dealers responsibility to insure that you have insurance for the vehicle, it's down to you. Although some dealers will still insist on seeing some level of cover, under their groups duty of care.

OP - assuming that the vehicle is registered to you and not the dealer, it seems strange that they would register the car so early without discussing it with you. There may be a registration bonus that they have used as part of the deal for you or something along those lines but I would have thought that it would have been made quite clear at time of order.

They are taking a bit of a flyer regoistering the car to you at this stage - what would they do if the funds didn't arrive for some reason and you could not complete the transaction?

Wierd.

No because it's taxed at the same time

Re-reg the car with the DVLA, hassle but can be done.

Then he will be fined for not having insurance.

Why buy a car you don't have the funds for?

If its a new car, if they have sold the one you were 'purchasing', then surely one could be ordered to your spec?

You can de-register a car with the DVLA yes, but as you say it's a bit of a palava andf can now take weeks.

I also would not wish to answer to my manufacturer as to why I was doing it, that could open a whole new can of worms.

Did you sign a CRD form for the car? It's pretty naughty if they have registered it without this being done (by you)

CRD form?
It's a DVLA generated document from the dealers AFRL system. It confirms that all your details are correct and should be signed (by you) prior to registration. It has been known for dealers to "sign" on your behalf. Frowned on if picked up at an audit, but probaby major bking rather than any other action unless multiple offences
