Well, I've just bought a lemon.

Wanted a new toy so thought to myself - what don't I really need? Answer being - a heavily modified isuzu trooper monster truck!

Made the 220 mile train journey up today. Made the purchase, off home. Brimmed the tank at the end of the sellers road and sat in traffic till I hit the motorway. Immediately, on gaining a bit of speed I noticed that it had no power.

Won't go above 2.5k revs and 30 mph.

Pulled in at first turn off and called the seller. He came down and changed the fuel filter and still no joy.
He called the rac and after a couple of hours they turned up. Felt the turbo hose and there is no pressure on acceleration.
He says turbo is borked.

I can't limp it home 200 miles so recover it to the sellers house. I'm now on the train home with no car (booked into a garage on Monday). It's been an expensive day!!

Obviously it was sold as seen, caveat emptor etc so I know I don't have a leg to stand on but I'm still pretty fked off. Looks like it will be an expensive repair bill too. I'm just having a moan at you lot as I'm on a train back to london with a carriage load of morons.

Anyone got any thoughts?

Yeah. It was sluggish but not that bad. Didn't take it out on the lanes as there was traffic everywhere.
Do kinda wish I'd pushed a bit harder now.

i did the same traveled 150 miles found out turbo didn't work, luckily still ran and was cheap enough to be a gamble (i thought it might just be me, but driving back it had no power), but the gamble wasn't cheap to fix and sold 3 months latter. 500 quid loss.

st happens but in your case i woulds 'sell' it back to the seller..

Might just be the case that one of the upstream hoses from the turbo has come adrift, perhaps in an obscure place where the RAC man couldn't see. Had it happen to me on a Disco TD5 back when they were relatively new. Could you hear the turbo spinning up?

Worst case is that it's a new turbo, they're not that expensive, you might be able to source a 2nd hand one from a breaker.

I'd expect the seller to give you you're money back if it broke within 5 mins - I certainly would.

However I'd also get onto the Isuzu Trooper forum and ask them what else can cause the problem as there's probably a few simple things to check - also a used turbo should be easy to find for £100ish

Ouch - but sold as seen.

Thing is once the turbo is replaced with a brand new one will it still be a good value purchase as in did you get it really cheap and this failure and replacement works will push it up to average price?

Tbh, I'm not massively pissed off - it's a (relatively) cheap toy. The turbo does kick in but there's no power coming out of it.
I can get one from a breaker for £95 so it's not the end of the world. It's just been a very long day.

I didn't broach the subject of a refund as I want it anyway and it was sold as seen. There would be no point in arguing with the guy when I was so far from home.

Hopefully it's not completely knackered and I can get it next week. If it was closer to home I would have had it recovered there but the rac wanted £7 per mile. And I didn't have a spare £1400!

Welshbeef, it's a one off. It's old and dented but it's had '000s spent on it over the years so I guess it's difficult to put a "worth" on it but it was less than I was willing to pay to get muddy for a few months.

I'm hoping the fix doesn't push me over my "not too worried" fund.

Thankfully the buyer / OP is not as stupid as you. He realises he messed up and is taking it on the chin instead of trying to blame others.
