IVA test pricing confusion

OK so the IVA test price list at:

Has various prices for "Passenger cars M1"

What i cant find an explanation of is the difference between "statutory" and "voluntary", and within those, what are "classes A, C, S" and "classes L, M, N, P"

???

6. Voluntary approval

• If your vehicle hasn’t been registered before in the UK, use the Statutory Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) scheme.

• If your vehicle has been registered in the UK and you need to prove its compliance, use the Voluntary IVA scheme.

Example: A taxi licensing authority may need evidence of compliance if your vehicle has been modified since it was originally registered.

Ahh ok so a kit car would have to go through statutory, fair enough.
Now, the classes??

M hearse, motor ambulance, or motor caravan
N left hand drive
P personal import
A amateur vehicle
C a vehicle built by a person in the business of building vehicles, using parts of a vehicle registered in the UK
S rebuilt vehicle

Safest course is always to try to persuade someone who's familiar with the system to check and present the vehicle - although they are likely to want a fee for their input. Can save a lot of hassle over small discrepancies. Things like how securely wiring needs to be fixed etc.
