Write off jag with plate change
Discussion
Hi all I'm a newbie from evesham Worcestershire
I'm looking at buying a 1997 xj6 jaguar,
I've done a hip check and it shows it was a write off in 2005,
The car is on private plates and has been since 2010 when the current owner bought it
And put his plates on
Is the recorded write off for this vehicle or the vehicle the plates were on in 2005?
Also is there a way to find out how bad the damage was?
It's a cat c and has had a VIC test 10 months after it was written off
Normally I'd just walk away but it's quite cheap and in very good condition, £750 with full mot and 115 k miles
Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Have you seen a V5 with,
Just because it's cheap to buy doesn't mean it will be cheap to run.
Yes seen all the paperwork, I don't think the guy knows it was a write off as he seems very honest (I know he could just be blagging it but don't think so) it would explain why an 18 year old jag has no rust and is in good condition- Correct owner's name?
- Correct owner's address?
- Correct VIN number?
- Correct registration number?
Just because it's cheap to buy doesn't mean it will be cheap to run.

Good post and wraps it up really - at £750 it's not huge sums of money and assuming it all looks and runs ok you could buy a 'normal' car for more but end up paying far more in keeping it on the road.- Correct owner's name?

If its straight and clean and has been loved - buy and enjoy.
Cat C means it was an economic write off but not necessarily smashed into very small bits.
Given it was 8 years old when it was categorised and the cost of replacement bumpers - the rear one on a X300 was over £1k and became a prime target for thieves in the late 90s because of this - and panels it may have had little more than a rear end shunt or side swipe.
Providing its got consistent panel gaps and the paint is good and you can't actually see the repairs then for £750 then why not?
The X300 is mechanically pretty bombproof so no worries there and capable of mega mileage, the only things I'd be concerned about is the state of brakes and suspension and tyres and any signs of floor pan or sill rust.
Biggest clue is the condition of the tyres. Any geometry inaccuracy either from poor accident repairs or bush/ball joint weakness will cause uneven tread wear. If they are ok and the car drives and stops in a straight line without judder that'll indicate the brakes are ok too.
Nothing quite like an old XJ for wafty pleasure IMO. Sure it'll like a drink but they are simple and easy to fix and parts are cheap through a huge network of after market suppliers and breakers.
The bottom line is you can score around £250 for scrap if it all goes horribly bad on you.

Make sure the box feels ok........not Jags finest hour, they didn't specify frequent enough maintenance schedule on those if I'm remembering it right. If the car feels and looks ok generally, it's cheap enough.
Edited to add, have the rules changed in recent years about plate changes on salvaged cars, I didn't think that was allowed now?

You're thinking of the sealed for life ZF 5 speed 'box on the subsequent V8 XJ and K models. The ZF 4 speed auto fitted to the last of the 6 cyl cars the OP is considering is agricultural to say the least but almost completely indestructible. Thanks, memory is a bit hazy from that period of my life, been a while since I had much to do with them!Ring them up. I had this, a £500 328 which came up as written off. Turns out it was on a private plate which had been written off by the previous car it was on, a porsche 928 GTS (
) and the 328 had a clean title. If you ring up whoever did the check they can tell you exactly what has happened.
