Our 2000 year viscous coupled rear axle petrol has done 170,000 and is still going well. Permanent 4x4 but main drive to the front wheels until loss of traction automatically engages rear. In practice silent and efficient. The later cars like this one had a Haldex system, more complicated and I am not sure what the advantages are. The most comfortable car I have ever owned on those 65 series tyres. Do not be tempted to swap for low profiles if you do buy.
The petrol is 210 hp and quieter and cleaner than the diesel as well as faster. It does about 30 mpg on a long run and nearer 27 mpg around and about.
Amazing off road ability considering they look like a normal estate car, which itself means you do not have to face the angry green brigade

Pre-Haldex you had to be anal about keeping all tyres within a couple of mm tread depth of each other or the viscous coupling at the rear would eat itself. Sometimes a puncture meant four new tyres or a partworn. Quite a few are now 2wd but the owners haven't noticed.
I read all that stuff about 100,000 miles ago and have not bothered to do any more with tyres or pressures than any other car. No problems yet. My wife tested out the four wheel drive last week by deciding to drive over the lawn as a short cut, but she had not seen the 50 litre electric sprayer I had just placed in front of the car, The sprayer pushed the car up at the front and she kept going until it was just under the back wheel. She was about to reverse before I intervened and elected to continue driving forwards. It drove over it no problem, it must be 18 inches high. The sprayer pump was ripped off and the sprayer was holed which meant a quantity of weedkiller went on the lawn. Amazingly in the sun the tank reformed, the pump still worked and a bit of glue did the rest. The Volvo was unmarked, not even a ripped off mudflap!
