BMW E92 320D coupe
Discussion
Hello,
Thinking about a year or two into the future, but I like to have something to aim for. But I'd like to get a 2007-2010 E92 320D coupe.
I have also considered the 325D, 330D as well as the petrol variants, but I have a few concerns which I hope a few people will be able to answer!
The DPF - I drive about 10 miles dual carriageway to work every day, and 10 miles back, so 20 miles in total. Will this be a problem DPF wise? Should I get the petrol instead. The fuel with the diesels seem to win it over for me, combined with the torque which the petrol variant lacks. I could always drive it above 2.5K rpm once a week or so I guess to clear it. I sometimes go on big road trips which would make me want the diesel more.
How reliable are they? And how long do the engines normally last for? Have a feeling the petrol may be more reliable as there's no turbo or DPF?
What are running costs like in general? Hoping to have it as a long term car, but I move out soon so I will have about £200-300 saving each month which I can use on the car.
Also thinking about the 1 series coupe although I feel they are a bit feminine looking.
Can't decide as the diesel may cost more in parts but cheaper on tax and fuel, but the engine lasts longer too.
Whereas the petrol is in theory cheaper parts but more expensive tax and fuel.
Hoping to spend about 10K and I do about 12-15K miles a year. Any advice?

You do 20 miles a day, yet you say you average 15k miles per year?
20 miles per day, 100 miles per week, 5200 miles per year?
Get the six pot petrol, they're lovely and sound infinitely better than the 320d. My neighbour has one and it sounds like a knackered Transit. Also the N47 engine has reliability issues iirc.

Both of your maths are wrong, there are 7 days in a week.20 miles per day, 100 miles per week, 5200 miles per year?

Still doesn't add up to 15,000 though.

I'm assuming he doesn't work 7 days a week, 365 days a year......Still doesn't add up to 15,000 though.
Drive them both. The 320d does sound a bit like a Transit, whilst the six pot petrol is a lovely thing which really makes the car. These things may not bother you; they do bother me, but I seem to be in the minority on PH in finding 4 cylinder diesels a bit grim. It is a personal thing, I guess

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/rules.htmYou know, I had the same opinion of 4 pot diesels until I was in a new 520d yesterday and it completely reset absolutely every opinion I had of the damn things.
Sounded like a sporty petrol, moved like a rocket, very economical.
On start up you can tell its a 4 pot diesel, but that goes soon enough.

I actually wonder how too, but I've done 14k in the last year. I often go on road trips for gigs/festivals mostly in the autumn/winter time though which adds a lot of miles. + weekends too, but it's so varied.20 miles per day, 100 miles per week, 5200 miles per year?

I'm used to the PD130 and find it fine, I'm sure it's nowhere near as bad too!Squishey said:
The difference in torque figures between the 320d and the 330i are negligible but the performance difference between the two is ginormous!
I gather the 1992 in your username is your year of birth? A 22 YO should not be 'aiming' for a 4 pot diesel!

But why not just out of interest?I'm moving out soon so I need something which will be reliable and good on fuel really. The 320D has amazing figures! They've also been one of my favourite cars so thought I may look into getting one!
